I want to move to Portland, but software engineering jobs are scarce. Please help.

It seems like the only big companies with presence in Portland are Nike and Airbnb (there aren't too many jobs at the Airbnb office).

I'm a software engineer and would love to move there if I can find a good job that pays at least $110k (base salary).

Any suggestions for good places to check out? Or should I just look for remote work?

* Companies that don't have long, drawn out, leetcode type interviews are preferred. I only have so much time off available for interviews, and I'd rather start interviewing now than take a month or more to prepare for the gamut of new grad CS q's. If that's not possible, I'll suck it up, kiss all of my vacation time goodbye, and get to practicing lol.

Ok. I’ll speak to a few people and move jobs to Portland, just for you. Hang tight.

There actually are a lot of tech companies, just search Silicon Forest on Wikipedia. New Relic, Simple, Puppet, etc.

We hire a lot of software engineers at Puppet.

I started looking at both New Relic and Puppet. They look really great actually. I'm interviewing this week and next for remote positions, so if I don't get those, I was planning to apply to both of them.

Question about Puppet: are you a Mac, Linux or Windows shop? Or do you get to choose which platform you work on?
      Jan 26, 2018
    • Puppet DianaWW
We are primarily a Mac shop. There are a few people who have Linux, but it’s rare. We are also just starting to beta test rolling out windows machines to people who need them due to their roles (like heavy excel use). We also use the google suite for docs, spreadsheets, email, etc.

  • Intel. How did you come up with the base salary requirement of 110K? Whatever you are earning in Bay Area, at least decrease it by 20%.

The housing is really cheap too. I went to an open house in Beaverton and it was 350K for 3 bed 2 bath. Same home in Bay Area is close to million dollars.

I don't live in the bay, and I have 6 yrs of experience with a CS degree.

350k is not cheap for a house that size, especially not in NC where I'm from. In order to truly afford a house that costs 350k, it's important to earn a salary high enough that the mortgage payment doesn't exceed 35-ish% of take home pay.
      Jan 10, 2018
    • As a general rule (followed by banks globally), you can easily repay a lot 5-6 times of your base salary (before taxes). So You can afford a 350K loan at a salary of 60K-70K.

      OP
What you technically qualify for is different from what you can actually afford if you want to save for the future, have an emergency fund, travel, support a family, etc. That's why there have been mortgage crises and why so many people are cash poor.

It is an unsound financial practice to spend so much of your after tax income on housing.

Sweet! I thought you meant they were just looking for new grads in Portland right now. I'll check it out!

I'm kind of rusty on my leetcode skills, but I'm a strong full stack web app developer. Are the Portland office interviews as rigorous as the SF ones? If so, I'll take a month or so to prep before applying.

Also, I would be open to transitioning to a technical program manager position since there aren't as many jobs there as at other locations. Is that doable at Amazon? Transitioning directly from engineering to program management, that is.

If anything they're looking for more experienced candidates. You can expect the same kind of interview you'd get at other locations.

If you have an interest in pursuing TPM I don't see why not. You could probably come on as SDE with that goal in mind too. If you have a good manager they will support your career goals. We also have a mentor program.

eBay has an office for mostly iOS / Android developers, but they are hiring more service devs too. Google has a Portland office. Amazon just moved in last year. Oracle. Walmart labs.

Moda Health, Providence, Cambia and these are just in Healthcare, there are a ton of companies in SCM and Logistics, it is a big port, don’t just look at the cool companies.

Thanks Shux! I'm definitely interested in healthcare tech development much more than "Uber for x" type companies, so I'll check out the ones you mentioned.

My goal is just to find a good place to work where I can keep working in web app development and earn enough to buy a house haha.

Bonus points if I can find a team where I'm not the only female dev. That's getting kind of old - being the token lady.

    • Cambia is awesome - yeah it's insurance, but it's non-profit, and they also have a bunch of internal startups working on real innovation in the Healthcare space.

Also +1 shout out for Nike, we are always hiring devs.

IIRC not hiring new engineers there but not firing ones that already there. Probably hiring support, sales, marketing. Check with recruiting.

Most of the engineers are hired for the offices in SF, Bellevue, Indianapolis, Virginia somewhere.

  • KinderCare is hiring developers and they are one of largest companies in town. 2,000 locations and 40,000 employees. Salary on point too
They are also sponsors of PDX Women in Tech and have an almost all female IT leadership team.
