Been working at GS as an IB analyst for a few months and absolutely hate it. The finance “culture,” strict hierarchy, and hours make me dread going to work. TC: $125K Newly interested in exploring more creative and flexible roles in tech like SWE or DS/ML Basic knowledge of Python and I come from math/physics background. What should I do to get started? Master in Data Science? Coursera? What roles would I have a shot at without getting a CS degree? Would of course explore self-study first but looking for initial guidance
Leetcode
TC?
how would you self study on those hours?
Yeah that’s gonna be tough
TC or GTFO
There are two hurdles you have to cross - having a resume that stands out enough to warrant a callback, and having the technical skills to pass the interviews. The most efficient way to pass the second one is just a lot of Leetcode and a lot of time. The first one is a bit trickier; if you're a social person, build your network and make friends with people who work at the companies you want to work at, and ask them for referrals. If you're not a social person, get random referrals from Blind and apply to as many companies as you can.
Also, put some fancy sounding stuff on linkedin and message recruiters after you apply places.
Goldman, along with jpm is investing tons of money in tech. In fact that new Goldman CEO described it as a tech company. There'll be a brain drain from tech to bank in the coming years
Pretty sure their first year bonus is max 60k on the 85 base so 145 max. GS pays low bc they can w the prestige factor. Elite boutiques pay waaay more
GS lowballs like Google for the same reasons Google does
i though new analysts get like 150k
they do, this guy is "bottom bucket" meaning he was ranked low by his managers
Self study —> data analyst (easier probably at startup) —> data scientist. If you have an actual math degree play on that too.
