Is this common knowledge among the tech employees at ibm? Of course, no company gives a shit about its employees, especially not one with 300,000 of them. But it does seem like everyone I’ve heard talking about this on the internet is like “great, good thing they’re going to get this dragged out in the open, it’s been happening for 20 years and everyone knows it” https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/01/18/ibm_government_lying_claims/
> implying only IBM does that
I’m not implying anything. I assume lots of companies do it. I wish their senior executives would make statements to news outlets too. It’s bullshit. Also your sentiment is a logical fallacy, tu quoque - a form of the ad hominem fallacy. Just because other companies do this doesn’t mean IBM isn’t a steaming sack of shit.
When companies said they have shortage of IT workers, they probably meant shortage of mostly younger workers.
No shortage of cheap workers willing to work hard for peanuts
IBM lays off a shit ton of people every quarter. It was only a matter of time before accusations like this came out. I will have to leave it up to the courts to determine if it’s true. If they do find adverse impacts on older people, I would have to believe it’s just general incompetence rather than malice because IBM generally is pretty aggressive about financial risk management.
When hillary loving warren buffet invests....scandals . Is apple next?
This is likely a "pinto" issue for IBM. They force people into arbitration, and one of the conditions for a settlement is silence. So... If this is as endemic as I expect (they lay off 1 older worker in the US, and hire 2 new guys for 1/3 of the older persons salary, if overseas, this could be the total for the 2 people), it has the potential to very expensive to IBM and other tech companies.
Yes, IBM employees are aware of this.

Everyone gets old. Everyone should be concerned about this
Everyone does get old. Who creates such messed up policies? And they systematically lay off people 40 and older, while under that age are largely unaffected according to the article. 40 may seem old to a 20 year old, but putting it in context of typical working years, using the retirement age as the upper end of typical, this isn't even the half way point. You are talking about most of the US workers would be above the cut off.
