IBM will do what they ALWAY do -
1.) Buy the company for the patents and intellectual property.
2.) Gut it and lay off all but a skeleton crew.
3.) Let a once successful small company die off in some corner of big blue.

IBM is where innovation goes to die in darkness.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I will note that being 100% open source, Red Hat is light on IP and while we do register patents, it too gets less of a focus than similar companies.

Is IBM as horrible as the stories say? Can someone elaborate I’m curious as they’ve seemed to manage to stay around longer than other contemporaries, 2000s contemporaries, they must be doing something right.

I remember working with aix mainframe in my early days that thing was sturdy!!!! Other than that the new stuff like mq messenger was shit.

Any of you IBM guys in engineering? I'd love to hear more, but I think experiences can be very different depending on department. That's certainly the case at Red Hat.

IBM is a terrible place to be, but many drink the coolaid with full blinders on.

The specific teams matter. I love my team and we have little turnover.

    • My team is cool but leadership outside of my team is caustic, disrespectful and at times abusive. That shit comes from the top. To pinch pennies they shut off cleaning staff so trash cans don’t get emptied but once a week which also means toilet paper gets restocked only once a week. If I have to bring my own paper towels and toilet paper to work, it’s a sinking ship.

Wish it was Google or MS...

    • Why Google? They are not so competent in cloud.

Better management (technical and otherwise) and culture is the main reason IMO. We do a lot of container stuff that would mesh nicely back into Kubernetes.

      Also google salaries :)

Internally people are not happy. A few x-IBMers came on board with Red Hat due to the toxic environment inside IBM. They are saying pretty much the same thing as CowsRfuzzy. This is a huge cultural mismatch.

LinkedIn recruiters are licking their chops now, I’m sure.

IBM have been investing in and having a close working relationship with Red Hat for years. Think of this as them finally putting a ring on it.

Death to Red Hat for sure

  • I think IBM and Redhat need each other as business organizations. It is not about whom you as an employee would like to work for.
