What is the general perception of software developers at IBM? The pay seems very low compared to more high octane tech companies. Is the talent and work environment not considered strong or competitive? 2 YOE $83k TC
It still has a chance to course correct. And be a good place to work for SDEs. IBM has been making some decent moves into cloud, and hopefully Red Hat will pay off. I was sort of wondering if IBM should re-brand itself as Red Hat or let Red Hat management take over entirely as they know how to run a company.
Yeah. Also curious what’ll happen w Red hat acquisition.
I was at IBM for a few years. Very very siloed company. It was like being in a small business within a collective of small businesses with the same company name. Not innovative in most areas. Highly bureaucratic. Low pay. Low respect.
Where are you now and how much did your pay increase when you left?
Increased 300%. Almost much more perks. Not that I needed that, but when I left IBM, my office was left with junk kerig machines that required .50 cents for coffee. That's how cheap and shitty IBM became.
There are capable engineers everywhere, don't worry about perception, only idiots care about that. IBM as a company is certainly not a destination place for obvious reasons, but if it's your best option now go for it.

iBM is a sinking ship.
It's core businesses are shrinking but their IP will keep them relevant for a long time. It's hard to sink a $100 billion company. Still curious if their software developers are respected in the community
It can be a shell company with just lawyers enforcing IP. You'll be laid off along with everyone else, but hey, you do what you want to do lol.
