Personally impacted by this every time a recruiter scans my profile or resume. As if older engineers stop learning (they don't). Companies are laying off more expensive genXers in favor of cheaper, more "passionate" aka crunch-tolerant younger workers. Calling it a skills shift will not hold water to a non techie judge who wont see the difference between a PHP or Node programmer.
