What would you do? Would you switch careers? I studied EE and CS. Except for some rare cases in the bay area, all of my former EE classmates are making less than six figures. The US is an anomaly when it comes to programmer salaries. Canada, Australia, and all of Europe pay far less than six figures for devs. I think it's possible in our lives that software salaries go down to their level. So what would you do? Would you still write software for a living?
Yep I follow the $$$
I'd do the same, didn't know about comp until I was about to graduate, and I come from a low paying country so the difference wasn't that much until I came to the US.
Does this include students from top schools that studied EE (Stanford, MIT)?
Yes, I went to a university that is ranked on par with them for EE and CS. Also, it's in a high COL area so salaries are skewed high.
I would still do the same. Didn't know about comp until about graduation. I worked my way through high school and college to pay for school.
To get 6 figures with EE takes a bit more time. Easily accomplished, if working in metro area. Being from top school gets your foot in door easier at big companies that will pay 6 figures.
I would still continue working as swe. That's what I love doing.
Do u actually hate it, or do u just hate amazon?
Just 8 years ago my pay was under 100k. I was super happy with it and was able to lead a good life in Seattle. I wouldn't have switched careers but might have started a side business eventually. Many engineers were in my shoes back then.
The smartest people always swarm to the best paying professions. It used to be finance.
Isn't it still finance? Tech makes good money but outside of top execs no one is getting 8 figure bonuses.
No, the greediest people swarm to the best paying professions. The smartest of the greedy get the jobs. There are plenty of smart people who don’t work in software.
