I'm a non-tech engineer. AMA?

Dec 11, 2018 24 Comments

Hello all.

I see a lot of sadness and complaints in regards to pay per amount of skill and talent on this app. I'm kinda doing this AMA to show the other end of the engineering field with hopes it may bring more appreciation for being in tech. Or answer anything else about my field if you're interested. And if you're not interested I don't blame you.. like at all...

Anyways lets get to it.
Geotechnical Engineer

There's no such thing as non-tech engineer.

The definition of engineering (according wikipedia): Engineering is the creative application of science, mathematical methods, and empirical evidence to the innovation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, processes, and organizations for the benefit of humankind.

He isn’t working in the tech industry, is it really that difficult to understand the intent? Civil engineers who build bridges, power engineers working in power plants, etc all count as non tech industry engineers. And they are lucky to be making more than 150k TC.

Do you feel like a loser with this shit TC you have? If yes, what are you doing about this?

I do not feel like a loser at all. I’m in one of greatest cities, making a TC I can save, invest, spend comfortably, and be grateful for, and working for a pretty nice company the first year out of college in a field I half love.

Do I see another field that I’d enjoy more and be able to make more money? I sure do and am developing the skills necessary to make the jump.

Thank you for your condescending question. The more the merrier

It started out just viewing for tech news and such.

Now its that and a resource for information to career paths, as I'm working to make the jump to this field.

It would be crazy to not jump on the tech train. Especially since I enjoy coding and building things. Its why I chose to be an engineer. My current field isnt enough building though. Its not as fulfilling.

Do you work in Seattle? What is your commute like? Are you able to save anything for retirement? Do you have a family? Does your spouse work? Are finances tight because of where you live or do you feel like you have enough to get by and have some fun sometimes? I don't live in Seattle. Where I live the cost of living is lower than SV and Seattle so I've always wondered how people get by in those areas with normal TCs.

      I don't work in Seattle.

      Commute is short.
I picked this location to really be invested in my career in my first year out of college.
      I'm able to save.
All my family is spread out east of the Mississippi river.
      No SO.. :(
My finances are sorta tight. My rent is cheapish. I live in a house with four others. I can have fun.

Yeah so tips for living in one of these places with average TC
      - Live with people
      - Save on food man. Its crazy what people spend on groceries. And I'm not talking about eating out, you'll definitely have to cut down on that. Pick a couple meals you really like and stick with them. I spend max $20-30 on groceries a week and around 2-3 meals eating out.
      - Don't live in the city. I technically don't live in Seattle, but could afford it. But if you are making 40k, my rent, 850, would be fine.

Are you jealous of the high comp from the engineers? Do you have a plan to get your kids to the tech area in the future?
    Dec 11, 2018 1
    • OP
Pretty jealous. It's annoying that we're all engineers but you all are more demanded. But hey thats just how life works. Same types of talent and intelligence, different pay. Obviously another reason why I'm making the switch.

I will try to help my kids with whatever they have passion and skill for. Do I hope thats tech? Yeah sure would be really nice. I won't push for it if they're not built for it though.

If you stay non-tech, what’s the typical pay as an IC with 5 YOE and 10 YOE?

Do you see colleagues with families work multiple jobs?
    Dec 11, 2018 1
    • OP
Some SOs work other jobs. But this is definitely full time. Principles and managers put in 45-60hrs. More at times. My employee contract stated I could not receive profits from outside the company. I don't know about the principles but would be surprised if they had another gig.

I'm employed personally. I don't know what an IC in a geotechnical role would make personally. Sorry.

Tbh I haven't heard of anyone doing that either.
