Imagine your TC is 270k (Base 180k, RSU 50k, Bonus 40k) what things will you buy / mortgage / rent / lease/ finance, how much would you save per month, consider having kids if you have family, food, night outs, entertainment, 401, investments, travel, medical, etc...?

*** Make sure:
- To give numbers for each of the things that you mention
- To mention your current TC, age, location
***

I understand the answer to this question will defer person to person but that's the beauty of it. We can all learn from each other.

Note: the reason I picked 270k is that it's not a low TC and at the same time it's not too high.. it's somewhere in the middle so that we feel the constraints but still we have enough room to do some of the things that we think are important us.

That's my exact TC. I'm single and 26.

I saved 70k, 20k, 10k in the last three years, which puts me at 100k right now.

I max out my 401k every year.

I spend the rest on travel, living and going out.

70k on 270k is pretty bad saving but you're young so thats fine. Start to get serious after 30 though

If the savings don’t include maxing out 401k, it’s quite reasonable given the high taxes we pay in CA. You can’t put a price on the social life and travel he/she enjoys. I wish I’d done more of that instead of thinking my 20s was a journey to down payment for a house in the Bay.

Good point. If 401k is not counted then there's 29k to be added which make it a good enough saving

In the Bay Area: a small apartment, modest used car, travel by camping, and save.

In North Dakota: a nice house, nicer used car, travel by camping, and save.

If that was my TC I'd be in heaven. Could get enough for a down payment on a house before I'm too old. I have friends who need places to stay and I could help them get on their feet too.

well 220K is your conservative cash. and that's what you use to sustain your expenses. any extra from that is additional savings added to your RSU

Soon to vest RSU is more guaranteed than cash bonus (which is performance based). I guess you don't understand that since you work at company with no stock compensation
      Jul 5
    • Accenture gfh
i understand that. but the point here is how much extra savings left the OP has to add on his RSU.

you are wrong. once you get to Managing Director level you are awarded RSU. for all employees we have ESPP

I'd save 40% of it into 401k & taxable investments. 30% will go to Uncle Sam, and live off of 30%.

I'd make sure to keep these proportions by automating the investments. Uncle Sam will demand the taxes. So what's left is up to you to spend

That is my TC in the Bay Area. I fly airplanes for fun and couldn't be happier; a dream of mine for a long time. My quality of life improved significantly once I realized I could save a little less and spend money on things that make my life more exciting and fulfilling. That feeds back into your TC like compound interest because when you're happier you perform better at your job.

Exactly what’s the point of saving so much extra if you’re never gonna use it??

Yeah interesting. I ended up taking time off to decompress because I'm super frugal. Would have made more financial sense to keep working and spend more. TC 360k
      Jul 5
    • Google sergeyyy
Right money does not equal happiness but the assumption of the question is that "you have money, now what do you do". My point is that a lot of people are going to have different ideas on how to spend that money, and only you can figure out what that is. Of course save for retirement, kids, emergencies, etc. But please don't be afraid to spend money on yourself.
