Lucky enough to have 2 offers, but extremely torn... A) Finance Manager at Google $250 cash (base + sign on + target) $250 GSUs Role = L6 on fintech team B) VP at well-funded blockchain startup (platform, not random coins) $275 cash (base) $200 equity/token mix Role = leading ops on flagship product. Reporting to founders, who all have had $1B+ exits before With the impending recession and volatility in the markets, I need to think long and hard about the upside vs. risks. Appreciate your perspective!
L6 offer is low, especially RSUs.
Even for a non tech role?
I've seen 220k RSU for L4 non-tech
Block chain startups are really about how much you believe in what they are doing. If it was appealing to me with all else being the same, I'd go with block chain. I chose a startup with mission I believe in vs going to another FANG. Higher volatility on equity and job safety, and more ownership in role. Saved enough, and frugal, to last years when recession hits. This let's me take more risk vs living paycheck to paycheck or less than a year's emergency fund.
What fintech team is this? Is it in Cloud?
No. Why, what's going on in Cloud?

Do you have a family or planning one in near future? If not pick startup.
This is a tough decision, as evidenced by the close voting results. Even in a downturn Google is likely to be hiring and since you already have an offer I am sure you could get another. If you are passionate about the what the startup is doing and they are well funded, it could be a really great experience. Is there one you would immediately regret not doing?
Thanks! Good question, I’d regret not doing the startup. Just terrified that BC startup will go under in a downturn and I end up jobless!
You could take the startup and then cut back your sending and sock away a rainy day fund. If you are aggressive you may be able to have sufficient cash set aside in just a few months. Good luck with your decision, it sounds like you know what to do and just have to figure out how to do it. You are in a good spot, deciding what to do is more difficult that deciding how to do it.
What’s your risk tolerance? Are you the single bread winner?
At $275 base, I’d say there is low risk. Go for the startup. That title, experience, and base will give you great exit opportunity should you need it.
I hope you’re right! Google has great exit opportunities too but the role is definitely more mid level
Don’t forget Google is copycat underdog.
