In how many attempts did you get a job at Google?

I might get a phone screen from Google soon. But after reading on reddit and quora I have come to understand that a majority of Google employees needed more than one attempt to crack their process. Hence the poll. If the answer is not one, then do you know why you failed?

I failed at the phone screen stage the first time and then passed all the way through about 18 months later.

That's inspiring to hear. I got a phone screen as a fresh (non-CS) PhD, but hadn't planned on ever applying again, as my degree is only getting staler and less relevant. I salute people who can keep plugging away at it until things turn.

It's true. If this is your first time, consider it a warm-up.

Failed 4 times, got thru in the 5th one. The best IMO was my first attempt, 5th was only 2nd or 3rd best.

Wow were the questions super hard? Were they Google code jam hard?

In the 5th attempt? Honestly, I think 3 interviews were medium, 4th was hard (couldn't even get to coding, but was able to get to the most optimal solution in the end). I think the differentiator was the system design, must have been strong yes.

Well yes of course. Even if Google is not cool anymore, for most of the new grads at least it represents a place that's at the pinnacle in our industry with good TC. Of course there are other places doing more important work if you will like academia or nasa etc.
