Disclaimer, I am not talking about every person I met but just a general observation. I am not from this country, don't look or talk the way "I should" (because I have an accent). I have a ton of work experience and also doctorate level of education from the most prestigious unis in the us. When I moved to bay area I was expecting a much different culture than east coast. But to my dismay it's actually worse. In the Bay area I've had bartenders, bus drivers, cab drivers, clerk's at grocery store and even completely random strangers outright disrespecting me or insulting me and I've become used to it. At least it wasn't the case in New York. From a workspace perspective I've had colleagues completely walk over me or outright dismiss me just because I am not from here. I've had people say to my face that people in the country I am from are stupid because they don't get good education even if they go to colleges. Id be run over in my ideas and work even though I have at least a few years of experience more than my colleagues. Colleagues would be amazed at the dumbest and most menial tasks that I do. They would not have any clue as to how to do it, yet they would dismiss me and disrespect me in a regular manner. I've had people fresh out of college join companies and then talk really badly to me, and others would just support that behavior. And when I say colleagues, not particularly where I am at right now, but also other companies. I've had people in FAANGs and (Ms) whom I've met and have had the same problem. In East coast at least people didn't pretend to be progressive and inclusive. But here the hypocrisy is insurmountable. And the irony of it all is that some of my best friends here have been conservatives, who despite their beliefs have at least treated me with respect. Has this only been my experience?
I’ve never experienced that. Everyone is super nice in the Bay Area - albeit a bit snobbish at times. I also have a slight accent. I think the experience maybe different depending on whether you are male or female, and how you look/carry yourself? Not so much your accent, or education, etc.
Never experienced this in Bay Area. Maybe you are the problem??
Too much to unpack. Most of the time the energy we receive is like the energy we put off. Cultural differences are nuanced & complicated; try to understand the people who make you upset before ascribing motive. At the end of the day some people suck; so we have to try to take them in small doses, but consider the possible differences first. Getting upset/emotional doesn’t help anyone.
I think it has something to do with how you're carrying yourself. Try to dress and groom better. It might make a big difference.
I have spent years of my life living in NC, rural Colorado, suburban Colorado and Denver, NYC and the Bay Area. The kindest people by far were in NC. Colorado people are mellow but a bit more reserved. East and West coast are both full of intense people lost in their work and minds with little life balance (though obviously not everyone.) this makes them oblivious to the humanity around them but not deliberately mean. personally I think you work someplace with a crappy work culture and so you notice other slights more.
This. NC, Midwest and South are the nicest people. Very friendly. I am.always put off by people in SF when I visit.
Moved to the bay area 20 years ago from overseas. Never experienced anything you wrote about. People are nice and friendly and don’t care about my accent.
You probably smell bad. No amount of education or TC is going to make up for that.
I think you just hate millennials lol
A lot of people responding here have moved directly here. They dont have any other reference point to compare.

Good observation. I had the same experience when i moved from east coast. People here are SJWs as long as its self serving. They preach equality , multiculturalism etc because thats what suits their interests.
