Indeed vs Amazon

If you were a new grad having offers from these companies in hands, which would you take and why? Both are software engineering roles. Starting comps are quite similar but Indeed seemed to have better raises.

Amazon
Pros:
- bigger brand
- broader range of projects
- better internal dev tools
Cons:
- on-call rotation (one week in a month)
- frugality (no free food, snacks, soda, ...)
- bipolar reviews

Indeed
Pros:
- better perks
- better work-life balance (open PTO)
- more engineer-centric culture
Cons:
- weaker brand
- limited scope to the job search engine
- worse internal dev tools

Open PTO is a joke. Performance reviews end up rewarding those who never take vacations.

Not true but maybe that’s the case for Amazon.

It all depends on what you value most in your life right now.

You might be focused on family and value PTO more vs being at the start of your career and looking to learn more. It's not always about money.

TBH I'm at Indeed and open PTO never affected my reviews.

I'm assuming you're in Seattle. Indeed is a remote office vs Amazon is HQ. Being in HQ is a plus to understand the heart of a company's culture.

IMHO if you're a new grad, go for Amazon's scale. You'll learn a lot. And in return for this experience more opportunities will open for you in other companies on the long run.

    Good luck.

Job industry is shit, stay away from it. Job search isn’t about finding people jobs, it’s about dealing with slimy ‘recruiting’ companies that take job listings and wrap them in their sign up flow to sell personal info to slimier advertisers.

I had offers from a number of companies including Indeed and Amazon, and I chose Indeed because of higher compensation, better growth prospects and much lower engineer burnout. However, if this was my first industry job, I would have chosen Amazon. In my opinion, spend a few years in the Amazon crucible and leverage that into a better job elsewhere.
