Senior sw eng at MS. Not sure about Indeed title. Total target comp in the high 200s, Indeed is a bit higher, all cash and there's room to negotiate, potentially bringing it to 10% more than the MS offer. MS probably not much room to negotiate at that level, big part is in stocks with vesting schedule. Edit: also, why one or the other?
How many YOE?
10+
they are very junior heavy in Seattle. I declined because no one in management could answer the career path for engineers, there is one technical fellow in whole company (Seattle) and he has 10 yrs of experience. Microsoft is better bet, benefits itself are worth more than 16k imo
I think with Indeed you should be able to get more. I would try to get 330k total. Depends on what your situation is, if you have family’s and want to live in the east side, Microsoft is a much shorter commute. Microsoft also has more choice of what kind of area you want to work. But Indeed pays more, and you have more opportunity to take bigger responsibilities compared to Microsoft.
330k for what level?
Msft is more prestigious right?
I guess, but what will that bring me in the long run if I'm losing money YoY? Also, if I have more challenging work at a smaller company, that could actually be good for my career.
True, but also tech scene in Austin isn't that great yet compared to NYC, Seattle, or bay, so if you wanted to leave indeed, not that many good options
You can always negotiate MSFT. Just explain that indeed is giving you more and that you'd love to work for msft, excited about the team, bla bla, but you can't disregard the higher offer, and msft should be able to match you. The recruiter typically reached out to the hiring manager for approval of a revised offer. In rare cases, the approval may need to be escalated to a VP or director -- still, it's all very very doable. I've approved a bunch of these in the past...
The offer from MS is out of band already for senior sw eng from what I gathered online (~265k total target). Doubt they'll be able to bump it further.
Don't accept any position lower than swe3 at Indeed. The engineering org is extremely junior but that can be an opportunity. Seattle as an engineering office is reaching parity with Austin rapidly and may overtake. Microsoft prestige is much less important for an established career.
How do you like working at Indeed? Any issues I should be worried about?
It compares favorably to other companies I've worked at including those normally considered top tier. There are a lot of opportunities and you can have a huge impact. They treat their employees well. Pay remains good. Highly data driven and iterative almost to a fault. Engineers own everything across the full stack more so than most other companies. The biggest issue is that they've hired a somewhat unsustainable flow of extremely junior engineers and often not based on skill, so you will have to contend with that daily.
Indeed Seattle will never take over Austin. HQ is in Austin but Seattle for sure will become more important over the years.
Wow I expected Microsoft to crush in the poll. Voted Microsoft, surprised to see more people would choose indeed.
For indeed I hope you are going to Seattle office. There is a new office in Austin Texas. Unless you enjoy the hot weather.... Microsoft is probably good if you want to vest stock.
The Austin Indeed office is actually tech headquarters if there's concern about being close to the center of the organization and not at the periphery.
This is obviously for Seattle
