This post is for people who have come from middle class Indian families to US on H1B and working in top tier companies like Amazon, Microsoft etc in technical roles. What do you think your net worth will be 10 or 20 years down the line. When do you think you will go back to India? What age do you think you will retire?
When we pay of off our education loan ,car loan ,home loan, spouse loan ,children’s education loan ,future grandchildren’s loan ..... In short never 😜
45-50. $5M for FIRE
FIRE?
Spend more time on Blind than LinkedIn and you'll get it
30-35 but want to come back and open up small business, like a pub or something, $1m would be enough
Lol, when you have question marks renewing your H1B every 2 years, wtf are you talking about retirement planning for?
Retiring in India? May not be as bad as to be completely out of question. Also I don't know if people planning to retire here have thought through what they would do for health care without an employer sponsored insurance.
How about Obamacare ??
2022 end. Came here in 2013. Estimating my net worth will be $1.2M to $1.5M by then. Planning to retire from IT, rest and travel for a year or two. Around 37 by then. Will try some alternate career than a 4 walls and 9-5 job. Need to generate a steady monthly income from my assets to make this happen. I can only see rents, non conventional income as a source as of now. Need to do more research on stock dividends and any other. Why moving to India? Social life. I have very comfortable life here is US and thankful to this nation for everything it gave me. But I never felt I belong here. I feel Life is all about how you spend time with the people around you. One example, I never enjoyed funny conversations among my colleagues because I don’t know context for them whenever they talk about movies, games and politics or something else domestic. I feel you need to grow up here since childhood to have a good social life. Otherwise your are just a machine working in office, come home, gym, watch some desi content on tv and sleep, repeat. It will be awesome to travel new places over weekend and holidays. But You have no places to go over weekends after few years or you can’t travel easily anymore with growing family size. So what do I do for rest of my life staying in US? Just have a $1M house here US, comfortable mechanical life with no fun. See my children grow with good facilities and no problems. They may/may not settle in life. But what am I doing? I don’t have answer. What do I do for rest of my life in India? Own a 0.3$ M house, may not be a life enjoying best infrastructure in world. But I spend time with people I like, stay close to family and friends, have fun conversations everyday can keep myself happy, attend all the events with my relatives and friends. I see my kids grow with emotions, bondings, values I believe in. I do what I love every day. We will have people around us at our old age. May not be our children (they may go anywhere for their careers) but many others. I will die one day peacefully. Wait, I have people I love around me then also :). Finally no offense to anyone. Everyone has their thoughts, beliefs, perspectives and choices.
Brought a tear mate... Good to see people with similar feelings
Good that you atleast know that you belong back in India. I have been here for quite some time and now feel like I am lost in between, belonging to neither of the two places. :( Any way, good luck to all of us so we make the choices that we don't regret.
Been in the US 20+ years now. Originally thought 0.25 million would be enough to go back. That milestone went by a long time ago. Then it was 1 million and then it was 2. Grew roots here. Became part of the community. Have great friends here now. It’s almost impossible to uproot all of it now. Decide now if you want to do it or not and stick to the plan.
When did you get your green card? Did you have to wait 17 years?
Took me 12 for GC and another 5 for citizenship.
On GC right now. Will get citizenship in 2 years and then leave so that the door doesn’t get shut behind me
For Indians whose children were born here, do you plan to move back to India before they're grown and out of the house? Do you think they'd be fine with that since to them it's somewhat like moving to a foreign country? They'd have to leave all of their friends and I'm guessing the opportunities in India for them would be much less than staying here in the states
The opportunities in college would be lesser if they aren't in CS. However, once they graduate from undergrad in India, an American citizen ship opens doors that an Indian passport can only dream of. No matter the field, sone of the higher paying jobs would be in the US, and the companies would not have to worry about visa loopholes.
$2.5MM @ 40 FIRE @ India.
Never.
