I keep coming across posts where people are mentioning $300-400k total comp for software engineering jobs. This seems super inflated to me. I'm a Sr Devops Engineer in DFW and feel reasonably compensated at less than half that. Am I grossly underpaid?
it's because of fierce competition between these companies with boatloads of $$$. nowadays, if company x isn't paying little Timmy 300k, he'll just jump ship for 400k at company y.
There's maybe 4 companies that pay that much for a very very limited number of top tier engineers. And these engineers tend to talk their salary here more than everyone else
Total comp would mean it involves their stock grants. Depending on the company this could be very realistic if people truly understand the real value of stock options.
There aren't many people on here that are claiming those numbers with companies early stage enough to offer stock options. Most pre IPO companies offer RSUs now
move to the Bay area where your rent will be 2-4x the dfw area and you will see your total compensation increase if you get a job there.
this. same house in DFW can be 4-5x here. and few companies pay that much. lot more palatable to pay that much with billions in profits.
I'm so jealous of your cost of living though. 150k for you guys goes a long way.
You are doing quite well with a base around 125k area in DFW.
same thing here. The 120k here is more than 250 there.
a) what do you make? b) Outside the top tier companies that kind of comp is very rare c) A lot of peoples pay is stock and the market has done fantastically, so while the grant may have been initially low the market makes it that much nicer
