YOE 30+, Masters in CS Passed on-site with great feedback, going into HC On my first recruiter call, when I did not know about TPM levels, I indicated I was going for a very senior level TPM role, just below Director. The recruiter talked about L4-L5 levels being "senior" and that's where I would be considered. I passed the phone screen, did my on-site loop. Most of the folks I interviewed with appeared to be under 15 YOE. Got great feedback I am being told. I presume this was an L5 loop. I asked recruiter again and he confirmed I am being considered at L5. I asked for some consideration at L6 in the HC (I hear they sit in on it) and a leveling interview if they see it warranted. This is the best I can do I presume?
Down leveling is so common. L5 is still a good level.
Agree and I am prepared to accept that but just want to at least make sure I have done everything I can. I am sitting on a downlevel offer from Amazon as well. Interviewed at L7 and was told the panel pushed me to L6 on a split decision :(. So comp is not coming in where I need :(. Out of band comp is being worked...
Could you please share interview experience for tpm role? What areas were questions from. How many rounds?
Under NDA so don't want to share questions but it was only lunch plus an afternoon. 5 one hour interviews and lunch with a lunch buddy. It was 90% PM questions and only 10% tech. One tech was whiteboarded, the other I had to explain over video conference but interviewer set it up as conceptual so didn't need to whiteboard it realy. High level system design tech questions but diving deep in some areas.
When you asked for L6 level , what was recruiters feedback ?
The first recruiter, prior to phone screen, I had no idea what L5 and he said this was "senior" so I let it be. Everything I had been told by 2nd recruiter (and here) is that leveling will be determined by HC. But after what I have been reading, I am thinking that the interview loop is set up with a specific target so now I guess I was slotted into an L5 loop and hence did very well with it. I presumed that they would at least need to validate me at that level before pressing more. So, I sent an email to my recruiter yesterday to ask that he probe L6 at the HC (if others do not).

You're likely an anomaly having 30 YOE, which exceeds the total lifespan of the company itself.
Yeah, I'm a dinosaur, haha... no I am not that old really. I taught myself ML (machine language) when I was 14 though. When I say 30+ I am only counting post college industry experience but ran my own S/W company in college before even then :).
