Informing colleagues before resigning from Microsoft

My H1-B transfer got approved today and I am planning to quit this Friday. Since I am going to a competitor, I will be walked out immediately after I inform my manager.

However, I have some awesome coworkers to whom I want to chat in person and let them know before I leave.

Is it a good idea to let know of other people before informing my manager? If your answer is No, can you please comment on how to inform my colleagues? My mentor and a few other people deserve to be informed in person before I am walked out.

Do not inform them unless you plan on getting walked out that day. From my experience at Microsoft, most people are good but there a few who would throw their mothers under the bus - and that includes you. Get their emails and/or LinkedIn info together before you leave and send them an email thanking them as soon as you get home.

If, and only if, you trust your mentor - go ahead and tell them.

    • I believe he is saying your "friends" might not be your friend and throw you under the bus.

Adobe is saying that there are some people out there willing to even throw their mothers under a bus. If they’re willing to go that far, u can be sure they’d throw you under the bus too.

I’m not sure how people misconstrued my comments. I clearly stated that I’d be careful about telling anyone. If you know you’ll get walked out, telling people runs the risk of them going to your manager (and telling your manager the news before you get the chance to) OR you run the risk of your manager hearing through the grapevine.

And, nope, I’m not even old enough to have a child that works at Microsoft. 🤦‍♀️

Don’t tell your manager where you’re going and enjoy a pleasant two weeks notice. Two weeks is the perfect duration for goodbyes

OP, normally when people leave MS for direct competitors like Google, the are asked to leave in two days. That was a few years ago. I don't know if things have changed since then.
