Insight AI fellowship worth it?

Friend is finishing his masters in CS and wants to get into a deep learning/machine learning role. Anyone here familiar or gone through the AI Fellowship? I have heard that their DS fellowship gives good exposure to companies but I haven’t heard much about their AI one.

Any advice on the process? Also feedback on whether it was helpful?

How much is the cost and how /why do you think it is different from self learning or any other ML boot camp?

I've heard it's a pretty good boot camp with good placement rates.

What was the cost of the program?

It’s free so I don’t know why xk00 was asked to pay.

Sure if it’s free I don’t see any harm pursuing it.

My bad, it is free. I had opportunity costs so it wasn't free from my perspective.

I got an offer from insight data science. I declined it in the end.

First, you cannot apply to companies outside their approved list for the first few months of the program.

Secondly, the number of alumni that get FAANG offer has decreased over the years.

Third, while it was free I had to relocate and quit my job. It would have costed me maybe $50k total including lost income assuming it took me 6mth to find a job. I believe you can only interview from 3mth onwards.

Fourth, I was going to renege if I didn't get FAANG and it could backfire since there is some community involved.

Lastly, I was actively interviewing and I didn't want to stop.

I made it to FAANG eventually so it was the right call.

Insight is good if your profile is weak and can't get interview.

Are you sure it was insight data science you got accepted to? It’s a free program, so I don’t understand why you were asked to pay them money.

      Do you have a PhD?

I’ve thr same question. Some of those programs require a PhD but not all.
So I’m wondering if all of them are research programs (and not ML boot camp?) and are all free?

All of them are boot camps. You don’t do any research I think. But to get into DS program, you need PhD and for AI bachelors is enough.

It’s very interesting that they ask for a PhD for DS. Not sure why?!
In any case, if it’s free, shouldn’t hurt to try for someone interested in a career in ML.

My bad the program is free, but there was opportunity cost since I had a real job.

If you're out of school, can't get interviews and have no job then insight would be good.

Yes, I have PhD. The DS program is old, and the term was back when data science actually meant machine learning and not power BI and Excel

It sounds more like a boot camp than a true fellowship.
And if the end goal is just a SWE FANG job, cane one do it just by applying for FANG jobs?

I don’t think the end goal is a SWE FANG job. The target jobs are MLE/DS/AI engineer.

Ok given that they required a PhD I expected to be a research program.

I meant the top notch ML jobs in FANG++ are basically software engineering /PhD jobs with ML skills. Mostly same interview as SWE.
