I'm curious why Instagram implemented the "You're all caught up - You've seen all new posts in the last two days" feature. Doesn't it kill the stickiness of the product? As it may force used to use app less frequently or for shorter durations? Any thoughts?
I think that is the point. Tech companies, especially social media, are under heavy scrutiny to make their tech less addictive.
Well the scrutiny isn't about addiction right? I mean, everyone wants people to use their products longer. How will ads get seen when I dont scroll past two posts?
Wrong. There is a wave of criticism regarding addiction to apps. This is the rebuttal.
What if we’re being gamified to get to that message; you’re not satisfied until you find it, driving you to exhaust a ton of time to get there
Hahaha. Nice trick, I must say.
Google did that with Android P & YouTube app too. People who are addicted would use it irrespective of these methodologies, but this time with a guilt after they cross their set limit.
Yeah. I believe people who are addicted to Insta probably follow more people - so more posts on feed. So reaching the you've seen all posts might be like a milestone for them and might actually result in more usage for the active users?
Yup. That's exactly why I feel it is developed . I appreciate such initiatives, it's good for user mental health (trying to prevent addiction) as well as for company's public image.
Negative connotations of these apps will catch up and become a PR burden for them eventually. They saw this coming and turned it into a PR goldmine by putting in features that will make people use it less. Having positive emotions about the app where it doesn't feel intrusive will also lead to higher usage over time.
I find it really useful. Before the feature existed, I was often frustrated with opening ig and finding old content which started influencing my behavior towards abandonment
This feature is very likely an attempt to address complaints around instagrams feed ranking algorithm since they changed it from chronological. Users are worried they are getting served ads and non personal posts, and are missing posts from their friends. This feature assures the user they’ve seen what they need to.
I feel same, but I will save lot of time.
