Internal Transfer at Microsoft for New College Grad

Joined Microsoft as a SDE (last month) and looking to switch teams but everyone is asking for a full loop of coding interviews. Is there any way to avoid these interviews?

Why do you want to change teams so soon?

Not a right fit to the team

Most people might shy away because you look like you will bail at the first sight of adversity. Not a good look to people trying to build a good team and product.

Typically if you have the same director or VP, it's alot easier to transfer, might not even need an interview outside of an informational

I've heard you need manager's approval if you're here for less than a year

Yes. Have a strong track record with support from your current MGMT. Otherwise with just a month in your position you're basically a new hire. And a flakey new hire at that who might want to bounce again because work just isn't as fun as you hoped. Honestly after just a month in an SDE role you probably haven't seen the real work yet. Talk to your manager and coworkers. You should have a mentor who can help you settle in

Can experienced new hire switch team after 3 months of working there if he doesn't see a fit with the team? Does he have to take permission from his manager?

Microsoft Capt1138 Aug 3, 2018

You'll still need support from your mgmt but that support could be more likely if your mgr sees the same misfit

That's strange. I asked my friend who is at Microsoft and he said you can do transfer without telling your manager. If I tell my manager then it's an issue right there.

Most teams in Microsoft will ask for a loop for a transfer unless you’re in the same org. It’s a very unofficial thing though. Technically everyone is supposed to get a loop, they just don’t do it if you are under the same CVP usually.

Can I get an offer and accept it without telling my manager?

Microsoft DOyu71 Aug 3, 2018

^This. Often the case you can get only informal if you have the same CVP, some places it's even EVP. Not universal though (yet).

In what way is it not the right fit with the team and how do you know after only 1 month?

IBM Jake96 Aug 3, 2018

I just don't like the product I work on. The work isn't challenging at all. I think Azure and ML teams can offer much better work.

LOL oh come on, be serious
