Interning at Facebook vs Tesla

Microsoft / Engswintern

Hey guys. I have the opportunity to join either Tesla Autopilot or Facebook for a summer SWE internship. I was wondering if you guys had any advice regarding which to choose based on their culture, career growth, and compensation?

I'm a bit torn because the work at Tesla seems really cool, high impact, and cutting edge (I honestly think self driving cars are the future) but the compensation isn't great and I've heard some bad things about the culture. On the other hand FB comp is great and is supposed to have a great culture, but I feel like the work won't be as cool or interesting (team matching doesn't occur until later so I won't know what team I'm on until after I've accepted).

Do you guys have any thoughts? Would also really appreciate some advice from people that currently work there!

Update 1:
I would still have 2 more internships after this summer so I can definitely try to reapply to the company I end up not taking.

Tesla. Internship value is not measured in dollars and cents. Facebook is not the future.

I totally get that. I've just heard for rockstar ratings FB ft gives almost 300k TC which is kind of insane. FT compensation is also definitely a factor for me

Tesla has and will continue to have layoffs. Go to fb and word hard to secure a full time offer. You will have a much stronger career and network

FB does not pay almost 300k TC for rockstar ratings, and rockstar is only for the top 5% so it is very competitive - I wouldn’t use this as a reason for choosing FB

Not sure if FB still has the 90k return intern signing bonus, but FB would probably be better for your career, though Autopilot is great btw

@anonna I could be mistaken but I've had a few of my friends get the rockstar offer and I think their TC did almost come out to 300k for the 1st year. But I agree in that it is very hard to get that rating and I shouldn't expect it

Tesla overall is a very subpar company, especially for full time. Very low TC, no perks, hiring freeze, promotion freeze, uncertain future.. the decision has to be solely experience driven to set you up for full time. Whatever you do, i would not recommend tesla for fulltime over another top company unless it’s really dope ass experience, and if you are ok with the uncertainty (layoffs, low pay, etc)

Thanks for the insight. I was mainly considering Tesla for the Autopilot experience. I would probably look for ft opportunities at other companies if I decided to stick to that field

In that case, there’s no harm choosing tesla (unless of course you have monetary restrictions since tesla internships underpay quite a bit in comparison to other companies).

Sounds like this is an important decision for your career. I agree with HQkV78 100%.

FB would be relatively stress free and you should be able to learn a lot and enjoy work life while at it. Tesla has no perks, stress is high especially with all the layoffs. But the "impact" of the work at Tesla might definitely be higher. Maybe even going into production right in the next release. But honestly if I was in your shoes I'd go for FB.

I want to say Tesla for the cool projects of the Autopilot team, but it is not a blanket recommendation for everyone and you should consider the longterm. If you just want to go for the experience, the Tesla is fine. But if you are looking for high pay during the internship, and also want to pathway to full time role with the same team, then Facebook is the way to go. So it boils down to whether you want to leverage an internship to full time. I think your mindset should be to intern at Tesla, with the intention of selling that experience to get a job at another company. Of course the compromise is that you may be giving up an easier pathway to a lucrative and stable full-time career at Facebook.

This was actually my thought process as well. I thought Tesla would be valuable because it would open up doors to other AV companies (ie Lyft, Uber ATG, Cruise). However that would be at the expense of having a set pathway to a really good FT offer at FB.

Tesla. Internship is all about learning and not about earning 20K more. While at Facebook too you would learn a lot, I think you can get that opportunity later too (direct full-time). It is much harder to get autonomous driving positions calls directly. Source: I tried to interview at Tesla and Uber ATG. If you like self driving so much that you would be ready to take a pay cut, you can go to Tesla as a FTE, if you want high pay, go to Uber or Cruise.

For internship it's all about what u can learn vs what u get paid.. and almost certainly u will get to learn a lot at Tesla because u know even interns works 60 hours a week 😁

I mean i feel like there is a lot of importance on what you work on everyday for the rest of your career. But I totally agree TC is an important factor. Just wondering how important that is as an intern

I agree, go to Tesla to learn and make an impact on the autopilot. Don’t worry about the money right now, it’s important to get the experience. FB full time, better Comp and culture. Regardless of which you choose, both names of the company will get you an internship the following year at their company.

You're an intern. Go where you can learn what you want to learn! You'll get paid later on at a different company. FB takes care of employees and a lot of teams in Tesla does not. But, you're an intern and you won't suffer with instability if you choose Tesla. Plus, autopilot team is pretty cool. If pay is more important, go to FB unless you'll be involved in team there that can clean up all this privacy and violence mess
