An AWS team has reached out to me for a position and wants to interview me. I spoke with the hiring manager and there is mutual interest. However, thanks to Blind, I have realized that the position is two levels below where I believe I should be. I would love to go through the interview to get back in the interviewing mode (prep). Would you recommend it? If I go through the process and get the offer and then reject it, is it held against me in future when I apply for the right level?
Let me guess. You interviewed for SDE-2? 😂
I don’t know why you would want to guess the level, but @DaaamDoood is correct. This is for PM position
What level do you think you should be at and what level are they interviewing for? My guess is you think you should be L8 and the interview is L6 (interviewing for L5 PMT is very rare)
Does anything change if it were L6 to L8 versus L5 to L7?
L8 is director. There are only a few PM directors at AWS.
Generally if you perform very well at the interview they’ll level you correctly to what they think should be the level, irrespective of what level the interview is set for. However, if you believe it’s two levels below, you should tell the recruiter that. If you can give specifics to your situation, I’m happy to chime in on where I think your interview should be at (am a bar raiser at AWS).
Thanks @DaaamDoood. I appreciate the offer and will think about it. You mention that they will uplevel. But what happens to the position? If I am overqualified for it, will they match me to some other position? Do I have to interview again with possibly a different team that has a position at the right level?
Usually teams that are hiring are open to hiring at a higher level if the candidate fits. If not, they’ll try to find another team that is a better fit based on the level. Once they make a decision to hire, they’ll find a team based on the level they asses. This is especially true if being up-leveled. You won’t have to interview again - but likely have chat with your hiring manager in the new team.
