Interview with Doordash or Cruise?

Considering interviewing with these two companies. I know obvious answer is to interview with both and then decide, wanted to get a sense of how to stack rank the two companies.

Would employees at either company consider working at the other ? This is for a backend role. 5 YOE.

    There will end up being a few big players in the growing food delivery market. Doordash and Uber are the best bet for industry leaders. I can see doordash being a 30B valued company in next 2-3 years like Chinas meituan that recently IPOed. Cruise has too many questions on if the tech will work imo and self driving car has is more winner takes all (aka waymo)

Maybe 3 years Is short for 30B but even going from current 4B to 20B is a lot easier than Cruise 11B to 55B which is GMs entire valuation. Of course if self driving sees quick adoption AND cruise is the leader then it's very possible and super exciting

      Great data. But isn’t 30 billion means more than 50% market share? How do you see DoorDash’s advantage over ubereats?

      Total addressable market is over $225B just in US (not including Canada), increased from $150B estimate just two years ago. And that's not including delivery outside of restaurant food

    Don't you guys think that Doordash will lose to Uber eats? Or you think the market is bigger than winner take all, or even Doordash could win in food delivery ligistics business? Anyone from Doordash with better insights?

      Think last mile food/goods delivery is a large enough space for multiple players. Same for self driving imo. Waymo doesn’t have to be the only winner.

      I don't think anyone really "loses" here. Basically, I think we've shown some very positive signs of being able to compete and there's no reason there can't be multiple winners in the market. We've been in the news for closing partnerships with several different massive brands, delivery volume is growing at a fast rate, etc. I'm not going to reveal too much but I think there are some really interesting things going on internally that will be differentiating factors for us going forward. Also, nearly $1B of funding closed in the last year if you've seen the stuff on TechCrunch - investors are buying in, so that gives me some additional level of confidence.

    I just started at DoorDash recently and like it here so far. Pay is great, team is friendly/down to earth/easy to work with, and there are interesting scaling problems to solve. I will say that there are some growing pains/processes around devops that have started breaking, but overall it's a great place to work and the growing pains are really nothing out of the ordinary. Heard good things about Cruise too on the technology side, but I'm obviously going to favor DD because I work here, I like our business prospects, and we need to hire lots of people. Join us!

      I think food delivery is a better industry than ride sharing coz people are less price sensitive and higher business moat. DD has done great job increasing market share, but to thrive against new entrant ubereats and incumbent Grubhub, they need to work hard.

      JrtIL - I’m interviewing with DoorDash. They told me base would be around $140k + no bonus but haven’t told me stock. Do you know what the range might be? L5 at Google.

      Hgsrhh - Whoever told you that is wrong or is lowballing you like crazy. My offer's base was much higher than that and my offer also included a good signing bonus, relocation bonus, and a decent amount of stock options. DM me and I'm happy to provide more details there.

    Honest assessment having also looked at both: DoorDash IMO has a larger opportunity for upside. Cruise is working on awesome tech but I wasn't able to be convinced that the work they were doing was going to see fruition in the market anytime soon.

      If they grow big, they can get into that business, I dont think it changes business model, just changes the means service is provided. Also I'm seeing last mile delivery autonomous system startups here and there more, getting emails from recruiters, Doordash can acquire them imo
