Does anyone have advice on getting help at work for a disability that isn't visibly obvious? I don't want to have to explain my condition. I am just needing minor accommodations.
Can you give a 2 sentence description of your disability? It’d help us to help you.
Talk to your manager and HR.. they should be able to accommodate you specially if there is a doctors note to guide them help you ..
I have a similar condition and have typically talked to my manager the first time I needed to take time off at a job. Every time I’ve gotten an immediate “take as much time as you need”. Haven’t ever needed a doctor’s note. I miss about 5-10 days a year.
I just got a disciplinary action write up due to me having behaviors that are common symptoms due to my neurological disorder, but was told to not disclose it when I was applying for the job, but was forced to disclose it to my boss in private after I had a sit-down with my supervisor and boss over the disciplinary action letter. I felt I was pressured to disclose it just to protect my job.
I'd raise a concern with HR
Thing is, the HR person is the same Immediate Supervisor who instigated this disciplinary action against me AND is the person who very likely got promoted over me for their Immediate Supervisor position because of workplace "Mean Girls" tactics. I even asked my boss directly in the same one-on-one discussion if I had been passed over for my Immediate Supervisor's position or any Full-Time position at the Tech company I work at (I'm Part-Time), and he said "yes and no", plus he suggested, even though I'm not required to disclose my Autism to the Immediate Supervisor, that it might help me to disclose it to her so "she'll think you're not evil".
Talk to your manager. Visibility has nothing to do with it.
It's neurological. I get triggered by random things in the environment, even heat, so I do my best to avoid the triggers but when I get triggered my brain goes into horrible headaches, vertigo, muscle pain and spasms. I just need the lights over my desk changed and time off if I have an event. They can last a few days.
I feel like you could get a doctors note for this. If you can, your position with HR and your manager drastically improves. Best of luck!
