Is 25 miles a lot to drive to work

I’m thinking of moving to CA, US to work on a new role but the problem is the office which i’m supposed to work is 48miles away from my wife’s office. So perhaps we will find somewhere in the middle so each of us might drive 24 miles each way (total 50 miles per day). Is this a lot? How tired it is to do it 5 das per week?

Ps. The route is from Irvine to Los Angeles. Not sure how bad it is at peak time.

Number of miles is irrelevant. What matters is commute time.

Look up times on google maps. Set departure or arrival time. Take the higher value in the range.

When my partner and I had to make this call, we decided that it was better for one of us to take the hit and deal with the long commute. So we ended up living right next to one of our work.

Live in LA work in OC, maybe yes. Live in OC work in LA, definitely no.

It takes me 30-45 minutes to drive 7 miles in LA each day, so you tell me 😂

It's not that bad everywhere, but a 48 mile commute during rush hour will likely take at least 2 hrs.

Good luck with 24 miles each way in OC/LA

      So it is not doable?

Of course it's doable but LA/OC traffic is known to be bad. Depends how much you want to spend time in traffic. I would personally look for jobs which are closer to each other. Amazon has an office in LA area, although it's mostly related to Studios so it might not be possible to get a job there depending on your background.

Look it up on google maps. They have a travel time estimate at different times of day. I wouldn’t do it

LA/OC commute either direction in rush hour is painful.

I would rethink the companies. LA to Irvine or other way around - both suck to the point that you want to hang yourself. There’s a reason why LA is #1 for worst traffic in the nation.

The OC/LA just isn’t sustainable. I actually just drove from LA to Irvine and it took me 2 hours when I left at 3pm today. Doable but you’re sacrificing a lot in terms of time and energy.

According to google map for that route, drive 47 miles = 58 minutes. So probably, 30 minutes each way. Still, what i feel is fast = furious. How dangerous it is?

Yeah. You are right. It seems to be longer during pear time: 1-2 hours instead. It is from irvine to los angeles

You need to select time of day on google maps to get a real estimate how long it would take. Also, finding a place to live exactly in the middle will limit your options a lot or might not even be possible

Depends a bit on where in LA, too. 5 vs 405 vs ?.

I thought Irvine is a big corporate town. Isn't traffic towards Irvine bad as well?

Do not drive it. Depending on where in LA it is, you may be able to take the train. I think it’s still like an hour commute each way but an hour commute on train is better than in traffic.

I’m assuming the spouse is in SD direction. That drive isn’t as bad but again may be able to take the train if the office is near the coast.

We lived in Irvine for ~6 years. Driving from Irvine to LA everyday would be miserable. If you live in the middle, it might be manageable. My partner used to drive 25 miles a day for one way, and he did not complain.

That's got to be one of the worst commutes in the country. I did 25 miles in a better stretch of Los Angeles for a few years and I would never even consider what you're thinking about.

Rideshare can make it work. Lot of folks on such routes use it.

I worked in Irvine and lived in LA and the drive is about 1:15 min, depending on what part of LA you live in. The one thing you can do is start work early, if you head out before 4pm, commute time should go down to about 45 min.

Depends on traffic. If it's bad you'll hate yourself. You could spend anywhere between 30 and 90 mins each way. Look up traffic online from where you want to live, to work, during your commute and adjust your proposed location
