Is Amazon investing in telecom?

Amazon is investing in satellites so that it can provide broadband globally...With the market being so saturated for telecommunication companies in the US, shouldn't traditional telecommunication companies also try to think out of the box? I mean satellites aren't revolutionary but it's sad to see big tech companies trying to steal potential opportunities for traditional network and cable companies.

Satellite deployment infers a global infrastructure. Currently telecoms are broken up by domestic region, which fundamentally stands in the way of a global investment like LEO’s for a traditional telecom. SpaceX and Blue Origin/Amazon have big aspirations for these infrastructure, the primary of which is likely not telecom disruption.

Good point, incumbent Telecom companies should be innovating. The infrastructure is so expensive to maintain and deploy as well as very political. You have to be in it for the long haul.

AT&T Direct TV has a fleet of satellites and experience in that industry. I am hoping 5G deployments with more of a fully deployed low latency network will bring innovation.

Amazon goes vertical in an amazingly short amount of time. Logistics, now telecom infrastructure.

Maybe they will successfully ratchet down the extortionate rates for satellite data. Stationary residential sat like HughesNet have become more generous over time, but mobile Iridium and InMarSat have a long way to go.
