I feel like moving out of bay area and move to San Diego or LA. But whosoever I asked they call it retirement cities for Techies after you have slogged in Bay Area. Not many opportunities to grow. TC - 180k Base - 130k RSU unvested - 150K Bonus - 12% YOE - 4
For money/career yes. Life, hell no. Make your money here and gtfo.
Any suggestions ? I feel San Diego has laid back silicon valley feels. 🙃
Look at the cost of a house... and then remember that house is not worth it.
Housing is a good investment, isn’t it ? Question is, is housing worth in San Diego ?
Former Apple employee here, you work at Apple, the world is your oyster. I left Apple, went to three startups, then decided to go back to big tech. My narrowed down choice was MS, Apple, LinkedIn, and some other places, and I chose MS bc I had already worked at Apple, and I wanted to give them a try. I didn’t aim for the FB’s, ubers (they reached out to me as well) etc because I only wanted to work at a tech giant. Google interviews were starting in October and MS offered me my position in September, plus I met the team and loved them, so I negotiated , they gave me what I wanted and I signed the offer. Tl;dr you can really go anywhere and back to a tech giant now that you’ve worked at apple.
Fb is not a tech giant?
Oh, sorry, are you asking if FB is considered a tech giant? I guess their standing may be diff now (I’m not sure) I essentially wanted to work at a company with many diff types of offerings, I was also interested in going to a gaming company EA, but I realized MS also has gaming. MS has a plethora of products/areas I’d love to work on/in, xbox, Hololens, azure (I’m in azure now), msr, the Quantum group...I don’t feel I see that type of product diversity at other companies aside from Google.
Trust me LA and SD aren’t any better
Why do you say so ?? Kindly elaborate
Don’t expect the same TC in SD. Only a few companies can sort of offer that (if you even get an interview). Most tech jobs are with corporations where they will offer you base pay of 80-120k given your YOE. Probably with no other substantial incentives. SD > LA though. Air quality in LA just sucks so much. But they do have better cultural life though
Quality of life in SD >> Bay Area. Pros: 65° and sunny 300+ days of the year Live on the beach for less than SF rent The most laid back place on earth Cons: More of a traditional corporate environment, fewer tech startups TC is less (120k-160k is high) Smaller outright job market, you'll always find work but not at flashy companies The real power move - get a job in bay area with bay area salary, negotiate for 100% remote, and work out of SD
The Intel Chief Engineering Officer Murthy did this. He has a private plane fly him up to the Bay Area at his whim because he was based out of SD (former co-President of Qualcomm). Probably got a local place in the Bay, dunno.
Life is sh*t, money is average, given the higher living cost. Career... may be yes! $180, is like making 80k elsewhere in US.
Really ? Even in San Diego and LA , 80k seems too less. 🤔
“Too less”...
