Is Facebook Still Prestigious?

Recruiter reached out to me about a SWE job with Facebook but it seems like these days Facebook is not a very good company to work for? Seems like it’s lost it’s prestige so I’m not sure if it’s worth interviewing there.

I also am interviewing with Airbnb, google and Apple which all seem more prestigious these days.

I don’t have any big FANG/unicorn companies on my resume so want to add one but want to be mindful of facebooks current standing. Not sure if I will be looked down on for having worked there since it’s had so much bad news around it these days.

The president uses Twitter but doesn't ride Uber. Therefore Twitter is more relevant 😜

Apple is a huge company, and there’s far more variance at Apple than Fb due to size and non uniform hiring bar. The shit teams at Fb >> shit teams at Apple , and conversely best teams at Apple >> Fb . Getting into ID or some top security teams at Apple >>>> anything at Fb.

Twitter up 84% since last year. Fb down over 14%. I think an argument can be made.

Founders of Instagram, Oculus, WhatsApp have all left. Facebook has excellent engineering and will continue to, but externally it is not a good looking company.

When you put Apple on the same level as FB/Google, you kinda come across as someone who doesn't know how to evaluate things. Talent at FB/Google is far superior than any other company in the bay area. You'll be challenged every fucking day! Stock growth is not equivalent to prestige. It's how investors perceive the outcome of the company. Amazon stock grew like crazy, it doesn't mean that they've great talent.

Every team at Apple does their own hiring. So yes, you will know exactly team you’re going to get into, and some teams have a much higher hiring bar than others.

I’ve worked at Google and Apple, and Google was more consistent, but I’ve met a lot of folks at Apple who are absolutely top of the industry, no competition from anyone I worked with at Google.

The trade off is I’ve also worked with some infuriatingly incompetent teams here.

I don’t know why it did not make any sense. I also notice that lots of engineering work at Amazon is not well organized or designed, but Amazon has made tremendous great choices of entering certain markets. We have not seen much from Facebook except Portal which is upcoming with Alexa built in.

Let’s form it in this way, Amazon’s success is not coming from engineering. It is mostly from business/product/sales. So as an engineer in Amazon we could not assume the prestige no matter how strong our stock performs.

It is sad that you feel that way. Engineering has empowered Amazon and realized all the great dreams in PRFAQs. You should take some credit for sure!

The hilarious thing is you probably won't even get an offer from any of those companies, yet you're thinking about which ones you're going to reject.

What a lot of people don't get is top tech companies aren't that selective about who they interview, they'll interview almost anybody with experience, it's a steamlined process and a huge number of people come through the top of the funnel. Getting an interview at a company means jack shit.

Also, this isn't a HR issue. You only posted it as one to hide the fact you probably work at a garbage company.

To be honest I don’t to waste my time interviewing at a company that can’t further my career.

Facebook unfortunately now has both a poor reputation and an uninspiring product. Sorry to break the news.

FB is still top tier. prestige is a function of density of talent and compensation and selectivity, and FB is def high on all those

Also there’s a degree of public confidence that you should factor in.

One could argue the comp and density of talent at a company like palantir is pretty good, but it doesn’t have a good image.

Fb is more prestigious than most of your list due to talent there. You go there for who you'll get to work with and how you can approach problems.

People ask some variation of this question every day.

First off, prestige is an illusion. If you're trying to parlay that into a better job most companies barely read your resume anyway and are much more focused on what you've done and how you do on their interviews. At the most, it may get you an interview. Now "prestigious" companies pay pretty well in general which can get you more money on your next job but that doesnt really have to do with the "prestige".

As far as Facebook itself, I have no doubt that they have people who are good at leetcode. That's what their interview process selects for. If there was an inter-company leetcode contest they'd probably do pretty well. Are they the best engineers, creating the best, most compelling, scalable, robust and secure experiences? Recent history and performance would indicate, no.

We don't handle scale like MS does and we're all leetcode junkies. We secretly handed over a contract to build our infra to MS. Happy?

Facebook should accept the fact that they can’t beat smart hackers. They have bettered facebook folks multiple times already. Forgot security breaches? Shows sub-par talent imo. Hard to digest, huh?

Don’t know why Apple is in this game tho. Their cafeteria is not free and neither as good. And their product is not impressive in the tech aspect(but really top niche on the design and hardware side)

I actually feel like Pinterest and Twitter are in the same boat. Like ex-unicorns league, both have good culture, decent talent, perks. Only difference is Pinterest haven’t gone public yet.

yeah that sounds right. twitter to me is a bit below because they have a rep for paying below market (and from personal experience can’t come close to matching uber/airbnb/google)

Facebook is handling data at a massive scale, probably the highest possible scale at this time. Their is a great talent at this company without doubt. Work culture is perhaps good. But more importantly, their core product idea doesn’t inspire me that much. It’s just a casual social meetup environment and various apps around that. So I wouldn’t work for them. My passion is rather work on something that makes a difference to people’s lives in a more profound way. Prestigious? Most probably, yes. Would I work for them? Most probably, not.

FB is prestigious, but I have lots of doubt about their hiring practice. Its very easy to game. All questions are available online. I know someone who's mediorce in algorithm, since they didnt even pass Amazon and still get offer at FB bc they have seen the questions before

    1. You should definitely interview and try to get an offer. Just use it to get higher offers.

    2. Whether you’d really join or not is a different question. Every company has own pros and cons, and trust me, everyone who likes working at a company will say how nice the people there are. It’s a completely biased opinion. Facebook is famous for its perks and pay, but the down side is its overly liberal culture and cut throat style of perf management. You’d get ousted within 3 months if you don’t perform.
