What is the equivalent position at FB and Uber?

I have 12 yoe and Google offering me L4. Do you think it would look bad on my resume if after a year I interview at FB? Would they question why i am still L4?

L4 is a junior position generally equivalent to E4 at Facebook but there’s a lot of variation, many Senior L4 is more like E5. You could potentially get E5 at Facebook now.

For Uber I am just concerned about bad WLB. Can’t work more than 40 hours. Definitely can’t pull 60 hours weeks.

I am amazed to see so many Uber folks encouraging everyone to join Uber. Not just this post, every offer post which has Uber as an option, Uber folks jump to pump Uber. And most of the posts contain negative things about other companies. I don’t see such activity from other FAANG employees. Either you guys are really need too many engineers or trying to prove something.

CaptOrange, maybe they are happy! Have you seen big turn over from Uber?

CaptOrange: we are hiring very much for the IPO. Also, there has been a big shift in culture the past 12 months for the better.

I did not see much “negative things about other companies”. Personally I like working at Uber right now more than I did at my previous places (Google, MS) - they were great places and I learned tons.

Uber right now has the kind of growth potential that FB about 5 years ago (before IPO) or Google had 10 years ago. All of this strictly my opinion. As this company grows, it will probably follow the law of “every company becomes IBM sooner or later”.

No, it's just fact of life when a company becomes 90K+ people and stops growing as fast. There is only so much room for leadership, and a lot of L4 work to be done.

How can they offer someone with 12 years experience L4. Why are you accepting L4?

Coz you get paid for your skill not yoe. If op is down leveled (happens at google) then it will get corrected in an year or so.

Coding problems can be used to get a read on a candidate's ability to perform at a senior level (relative to internal expectations), actually. If you don't see how, then they've leveled you appropriately.

I should also add that scope of work and expectations for mid-level candidates in these companies is actually closer to what the rest of the industry would define as "senior" anyhow, so there's almost always some title/level deflation for people coming from other corners of the industry.

    • Say what you want. There is no technical problem for which I can’t find optimal solution. If it is solved before I can find it and implement it. I dont believe if I can crack coding interview somehow you can judge my level of problem solving in a job setting.

A good technical problem doesn't actually have a single "optimal" solution; you can optimize for one thing or another (e.g. time vs. space complexity vs. readability and flexibility), but there are always multiple trade-offs to consider. The more real experience a candidate has, the better they'll manage those trade-offs--even for trivial coding problems.

If you get something that really does have one clearly perfect or ideal solution, the problem is too contrived to give a useful signal, and your interviewer isn't doing their job (often happens at junior levels, because these people get the worst/least experienced interviewers).

I worked at worlds top University and then was a contractor. I have personally launched 10+ apps as side projects. It’s sad that FANG thinks if experience is not from FANG it’s shit.

Don't take it personally. It's just the way things are. They care more about the technical difficulty and scope of your work rather than how many yoe you have. If you were leading 30 people at a relatively unknown company, you won't be given L4.

Did you have a system design round in your interviews? If so, you were slotted for L5 but didn't meet the bar and were given L4 instead. Otherwise, you were slotted for L4.

Note that L4 is the terminal level at Google. People aren't expected to grow over it. It's a wide band.
