I am trying to move from Atlanta GA to Raleigh NC. I currently make 70k total as a data center technician with 6 years of experience (hardware repair, networking etc). I have had a few interviews and gotten offers of around $50k with lower benefits. Is that normal for the field and area or am I getting low balled?
If 70k is your base in Atlanta, then you are overpaid for a DC tech. But you said total so not sure whats the base. 5ok base is a little low. I know entry level engineers make 70k base in RTP. With 6 years technician experience, you should make the same or just a little more maybe !
Base is 45k, the rest is stock/bonus/overtime.
Your best hope for ATL is AT&T IDC Technical Specialist”. (Lithia Springs) Rack & stack but you’re union and top out at $41/hr. Management is incredibly hands off and your #1 job is to be present.
Lithia springs is the Atlanta area, I'm trying to leave here.
Raleigh doesn’t have as good a selection of companies you’d be working in DC’s for. —Internal— Clorox First Citizens Bank —LEC— TW Telecom Level3 —3rd Party— Flexential TierPoint OnRamp Anything matching your pay would likely require an RCDD or CDCMP. You won’t experience a career jump or quality of life increase moving to Raleigh. CoL is about level in the cities-proper but for your specialty I’m going to say Atlanta has better selection and cheaper suburbs.
Thanks. I'm not trying for an increase, just want to relocate for life and family reasons and I'm hoping for equivalent or close pay. The 2 offers I've gotten were lower than I was expecting and I wasn't sure whether to accept that that's the market in Raleigh, or to keep hunting.

Wtf. You work at google and make 70k total? Never heard of that low TC at google.
Yes, that's normal for the data centers. Most jobs are level 1-3.
