Hi Blinders, been in s/w dev for 16 plus years. didn’t grow in ladder. dev is becoming very competitive and moreover losing interest and motivation. Is exec-MBA a option from good B-school. would top b-school consider 40+ candidate when someone didnt grow much in career. Ok to live with fake reality - Age is just a number. After MBA, Woud company hire me ? have seen companies prefer younger people.
Just getting MbA wouldn’t help you to grow further, I think trying out management within Cisco our outside first might help and then mba would boost ur careers to senior leadership roles
If someone else is paying your tuition, the MBA might now be a bad idea. If you're paying, getting the cheapest available would be a better option. For someone who is around 40, you're probably not going to totally change careers but an MBA could help you move into some boutique consulting or management with another firm. Then again it might be able to do it with out going to school if you can sell yourself well.
the only time it’s a good option is when ur company sends u right after a promo
Same as above advice. I made a switch from tech/engr to Mba roles, but 90% of my classmates with similar back grounds stayed with their tech jobs post Mba. And they were in late 20s early 30s. Switching is hard unless you are willing to burn your ships and give your future career preference 100% ... Once you do, I don’t think age will stop you. If I were in your shoes, I would start switching to Mba type of roles now inside your org, after taking some short online courses on the topic (marketing, product management, analyst etc., heck strategy if you can pull it off)...
Do you have any recommendations for the short online/classroom courses?
Explore coursera & Udemy. Plenty of courses.. just pick some high ranked ones
Try to switch into management role or product mgmt roles. Cisco has lot of TME/PM roles
Thanks 🙏 everyone
