Wondering if is good for our tech scene, and cool enough to cross the border and get cray cray on the weekends?

Unless your in BioTech, no. I left for Seattle as the opportunities in tech were limited. Generally the largest employers are UCSD, DoD & DoD contractors, Healthcare and then Qualcomm and in that order. There are alot more Dev & tech opportunities in Irvine.

The startup scene is slim and the big techs like Amazon and Google have a fairly small presence there.

Edit: there's also Intuit, they have a sizable presence there. Not including BioTechs intentionally as they are fairly well known.

That’s your answer 🙂. Reasonable home prices are inversely proportionate to job market.

You must be coming from Bay because nobody would say San Diego home prices are reasonable. 😉

      OP
I saw homes from like 75k to 500k - some are in the upper 800-900k but hey having a small home for a small family is ok to me - plus most of them have a pool for some reason, now that's the dream lmao and no I am from Pittsburgh, PA

    • LOL to those home prices. If you want to live anywhere decent you are looking at 700k+ for a single family home.

And by the way, Amazon's presence here is pretty decent and growing really fast.

Incredible place to live, if you have a remote role from a decent paying company. Otherwise, job market sucks.

Viasat is there. Not a really well known company but pays about the same as Qualcomm and is really low profile.

Viasat is nowhere near competitive with the rest of the area. I had a phone interview with them and for a Senior Engineer role that was asking for at least 7 YOE they topped out at $150k. That’s peanuts compared to what is being paid out by Sony, Intuit or Qualcomm.

You got lowballed really bad then. 2YOE 110k when I left.

It wasn’t even a low ball, because it just ended the conversation before the interview even started. If they were serious they would have said they could be flexible and we could have negotiated at the end, but they basically said “our range for this role is $120k-$150k”. There is just no reason for engineers to tolerate the low offers in San Diego because the demand for us is too high.

Didn’t know that they pay that low. Anyways I jumped ships as you can see😬😬

Which company can pay 300k TC in San Diego?

    • Indeed WnPf22
You should be asking how many cities except for SF pays 300k. SF gets that TC because of that insane COL.

But the taxes in San Diego are same as sf

I’m with you OP, I love North county and hope to move there one day. Fingers crossed more tech pops down there over the coming years. UCSD is fighting the good fight with high rankings in CS grads and campus development, maybe just a matter of time.
