No. 160 not enough in the Bay Area. Your shares are worthless unless the company is going public soon or getting bought out. Leetcode for a couple of months then try FAANG for real and high TC.

Happy where I’m. TC ~ 220. If I could get in, my TC could go close to 300. However, I’d still wouldn’t give up my 10min commute, excellent WLB, and amazing flexibility.

Thanks guys for your insights ,matters a lot as I am changing jobs and moving my family to a different area

Wow! If family involved then for sure 160 ain’t enough. I’m sorry I will not count your paper money. Startups with 100m in round B are dime a dozen in the Bay Area. Just look at the last 10 years and count how many techs went IPO. Only a handful! With spouse and kids, you need at least 250k of real Benjamins.

Hmm tnx will think about that. To the sustainably case, what is your current base pay (not total) and how much do you get per paycheck (fortnight)

Decided to take this! Pros - higher base, working only on software(no hw shit ), amazing culture (no politics) , keep at leetcode and ask upto 200k base jump within a year at Bay Area. || cons - losing 60k In stock and bonus at my CC December(2019) (my time at Bay Area seems to be worth more)

  • With 6 yrs of experience, I am really doubtful if you can get more than $160k base since you are a SDET. Yes, 5% of the companies can pay you 10-15% more in base but that's not going to be easy.

Also looks like are you a hardware QA. Not many networking companies pay that kind of base to QA with 6 yrs of experience

More important - what's the strike price and Enterprise price of those 15k options?

15k cash as sign on and 6month merit increases. Strike price they said rite now it’s at $2
      Jun 24
    • I am assuming the Enterprise price would be around $7-8 bucks and they are giving you $100k worth of paper money.

Also I was hoping to get out of San Diego and out of modem software test would be better for me to make a more generic effort into software engineering in future

    • Take it 👍

      It's not a bad offer

Also depends on the Series A/B/C round they are at, you are looking at few x times of that stock money which puts your package above $250K easily.

And you can change once you are in Bay Area. Win win situation.

They are well funded $100M total in series B for now

Sounds like a good opportunity to advance career even if TC isn’t as much for 6 YOE. What is current TC?

I definitely see the same thing. I’m trying to move to Boston. My COL will double but no one except FAANG pays close to double

That may be true for SDET, but as a SDE i got two startup offers for 140k base in San Diego with ~3 years exp. So it is possible outside of FAANG.

Any reason why you did not take it yet, that clearly seems more than a software staff at Q, as base

I also had an offer from Amazon that was greater than those. So I took that instead

It's not enough. I'm a new grad working in the bay area and I'm getting 130. You should be making much more than me

True, but it seems in San Diego companies are not that willing to go above a certain point . And working in the modem software test has very limited scope

I have been practicing leetcode 300+ for a year now. Had Amazon, MSFT and AAPL on-sites already and 2 startups onsite . Passed the 2 start ups and AAPL, did not join AAPL as did not like the team. This is final decent offer. The other startup was in San Diego so lowballing .

Also it seems (by calculating) with 160k, I should be making $3800-$4000 per paycheck, after tax and 5% 401, and insurance premiums ... that seems to be good to live .. ?

Just talking base, I will have the other income from stocks, they give travel allowances, sign on etc ...
      Jun 25
    • So even your apple package was just $190k. 30k more.

      OP
Yes . And the reason I didn’t like the team. They were vague till the very end. For a software engineer position they did not ask a single programming question onsite ..

How's the cost of living in San Diego compared to the bay area?
    Jun 24 1
    • Qualcomm / Eng parrotcork
      OP
Depends where you live, UTC is expensive (2300 for a 1b 1b) but there are places which are cheaper. But opportunities as not as easily seen .
