Is an MBA worth it?

Already have an MS; career is stuck at an IC level but want to move up. Dont want to be programming forever. Currently this is the only motivation for MBA. Tc - $250K Yoe- 6 Edit: I will only consider doing an MBA if I get an admit from any of the top 5. Also, only considering Executive MBA, not full time. Tuition will be atleast $150k.

I mean, it can help. But is it worth the $40 grand minimum (2nd tier school) to get? You can probably get there by just having a good manager who listens to your career ambition and helps pave a good roadmap for you.

40Gs? Lol I think it's a 120Gs for UCB for part time. MBA 2nd tier school makes no sense to me. MBA is all about the brand. So good luck.

Lol. Well 2nd tier MBA was 50k when I got my master 10 years ago. I’m sure inflation has botched those numbers heavily since then. 1st tier MBA is burning your money. If you have FAANG under your belt, you don’t need to overpay like a goddamn fool for a MBA. Just my $0.02. I don’t think they’re worth it whatsoever.

Move to a different company.

This. Apply to other companies for manager roles. Start ups are also a good bet. Getting 2-3 yrs of exp should get you a manager role in FANG if that's what you're after.

Just did a FAANG to FAANG transfer, as an IC. So cant change for 2 years atleast.

Cornell's one year tech MBA. Look it up if interested. To go the exec route, join a company as a manager if the current company has no opportunities.

Dont want to leave job and do full time. :/

I’d only consider going if it’s a top 5 program.

Everything has timing. Best timing for MBA was like 2006.

First off at 6 years of experience you are hardly stuck its a marathon — clearly from what you describe you aren’t liking software engineering I would suggest 1) figure out what field of work you want to be in 2) identify a program or opportunity hat will help you build skills toward it MBA will give you different set of skills it may not be aligned with what you ultimately want to do for rest of your life IMHO MBA is ideal if you are more seasoned middle manager in tech looking to understand how to build business - it’s not going to valuable to you without experience or opportunity to use what you learn

Good points, thank you.

What are top5 though? It seems like there are at least 10 schools based on where are you looking

Apple Perplex3d OP Aug 26, 2018

Top 5 for EMBA - Booth, Wharton, Kellog, Haas, Sloan.

I talked to a guy who was exploring a possibility to partner with me for a startup. He sold one, he then paid for part time executive MBA program in high ranked university. Even though he liked it a lot, he agreed that it was more like motivationaly oriented, 'you can do it!' style, with no real useful content.

If you want Mba to change your career, go full time somewhere. If you want Mba to accelerate current career and shift to management then part-time/executive is fine and no need to worry about top 5. Get an Mba in a region you want to work. For acceleration it’s more about broadening your knowledge and checking the box. Berkeley and Santa Clara university in Bay Area

When I was a few years out of undergrad, I asked my boss (who had an MBA) if I should consider it. He gave an emphatic “NO”... He said I didn’t need it and it wouldn’t help. (Admittedly, just one data point...)
