Is everyone here rich?

New jannet

I'm new to blind, but a quick 10min browsing sessions shows like most all posts around money/compensation/career/etc etc comes from millennials making TC of $300K+

Can we get like some data mining and figure out how everyone who posts on blind is so rich? What % of the population is on this site? Rest of America needs to jump on this bandwagon

Most Americans love living outside their means. If you check the net worth threads, you'll find that people can't even save up net worth equal to their salary, let alone in the millions which is what they should have. People believe that because they're making more money, they deserve to spend it all. If the market ever crashes, these people are all fucked.

    TC: 350K, net worth: 1M, PhD + 2yoe

Hahaha 350k TC with PhD... They'd start you at 61 at best .. Which makes you a 63 if you are a rock star. 63s get 280k max at msft and that's only with competing offers ..

If the above is true then you have low street smarts because you could have made at least 30% more at FANG...

Another thing is that if the market does crash, we'll still be making the same proportionally to the economy so it makes no difference... A top income job will always be a top income job.

@google I did 8 years of PhD, which means 8 years of possible internships. PhD stipend + internship = 50-100K TC. Most of that was invested.

People on here act like they are middle class with 500k salaries and bonuses. I'm around 65k but I live comfortably within my means and my side hustles in IT push me closer to 80 but I agree that most posts on here seem way out of my league.

I live in the Detroit area. I have a mortgage at a fixed 3% interest rate a car a truck a boat and a motorcycle. Most of those I bought with cash and fixed, though I am making payments on the car and it's new. I can put 9% a month in my 401k. So I'm good.

Roku I moved from OH to AR to Seattle. In Seattle a $800-900k house would cost me 105k in AR and 200k in OH. 500k in seattle would be confortable. 500k in bay area would also be comfortable, assuming you dont have a spending problem. however houses go up much more than seattle. Also if you have children 500k is a lot less. Day care can cost 2-3k a month even more for 1 child.

It's still the 18th largest city in the country, I've lived east and west coast as well as Texas and I don't see anything they had there they don't have here. There are 750k condos in Detroit you just don't live there and your fine. There is a tech shortage here, so come on down or up or over. :-D

I live in a suburb of Detroit and my TC this year will be about $230k. You won’t make that kind of money writing code (or administering servers) in a cubicle in Detroit though. It’s really about developing the right skills and knowing which companies value those skills the most...wherever you live (assuming you are optimizing for TC).

The only options are not city vs rural.

City, Suburb, Exurb, Rural etc exist.

Unless you’re using “city” to mean “urban” since that’s how census bureau classifies ([inner-]city, surburb, exurb).
      Jun 8
    • Google / Eng QrJx75
public2 sounds like a know-it-all. There's plenty of big cities where 300k would be ballin'. Dallas/Houston/Austin/Denver/DC/Charlotte/Chicago/San Diego.
      Jun 10
    • Facebook public2
And other than Austin and San Diego where 300 would not be that much which would you want to live in?
      Jun 10
    • That's a very smug opinion. Go work as a prep cook for $7.50/hr and then come back and let's evaluate the value of 300k. Rich is relative, but considering the American lower-middle class is richer that the great majority of the worlds population, it could be safe to say that 300k is rich.
      6d
    • Facebook public2
Yep rich is relative which is why I included location. It would be illegal to pay a prep cook less than 15 in most of these cities for instance.

  • I’ve noticed the same but this could be due to a number of factors. For one, economic relativity. Making 300k+ in San Francisco isn’t the same as 300k+ in Duluth, Minnesota. Second, I think the people most “enthusiastic” about asking questions regarding TC is going to most likely be those in the higher ranges. Third, a lot of them could be totally full of shit and just trying to solicit DMs from pretty ladies. Point is, if you want to make that kind of money, you can. The biggest mental mistake people make is convincing themselves there’s some number or level they’ll never be able to reach. Assume you’re already on your way to becoming “rich” as you say and go from there.
