My fears have come true. In last two weeks, I have read at least 5 gangrape and burning alive stories of girls and women in different parts of India. I am sure there were more and I did not follow enough. With increasing unemployment, excessive focus on religion and a floundering economy, is the uncontrolled population finally showing signs of a massive social unrest ?
Ibm and pwc, I am Indian and I had huge arguments with fellow Indians regarding this. The view there seems to be that Justice is useless in a court, and that the police are the hero, India needs more such policemen. The fact is the lady raped is dead, so we can't identify the men, and the men are dead so they can't defend themselves and the confession is not guaranteed to be uncoerced. Looks like an open and shut situation and politically motivated. But people think it is right. They are tired of waiting. And vigilante justice is what they want. Much like Gotham. Trouble is revolution isn't gonna happen. Before a revolution happens more political and civil disobedience is going to, till it takes the form of revolution. I think the people are dearmjng of revolution all they will get is vigilante
India as a nation is failing here on multiple fronts. This doesn't come as a surprise with so many uneducated, radical nationalists, and sexists. Women have never been free in India and I feel ashamed to say that I don't see any signs of moving forward.
Anyone can be a keyboard warrior and blabber shit about anything. But it takes a lot of courage to come back and do your needful though. If you are a non-Indian, this was meant to all the pseudo-Indians on this thread.
You don't need courage to give an opinion. Just like how you gave yours on Cisco's comment.
Indian people are cowards with short memories, we will burn some candles and will go business as usual in voting these rapists to parliament, which we totally deserve.
This has always happened. When one news report goes viral, everyone starts reporting more of it. This lasts for a few weeks until the next big news event
Are you saying media is cooking up these stories?
SDDooo you are a gadha of Google quality if you believe these are just stories promoted by media, media is doing actually the opposite.
I’m an Indian Male and while I know that a lot of Indian men have completely lost it and behave like animals when raping and molesting women. But in this post, I’m trying to address a greater issue. This is not just about the sexist mentality and the rape culture, it is about the socio-economic degradation of the society, where rapes represent just one sign of the larger social unrest yet to come.
I didn’t say “all”. I said a lot. A lot in absolute terms, not in relative terms. You’re correct about population increasing the scale but also a whole lot larger % of population in India is uncultured & uncivilized as compared to the US. I hope that’s not surprising to you. Just scroll through timesofindia.com and just see the feed of gang rapes and burning of women. If rapes were not bad enough, we have crossed all levels to go back to barbaric times.
I believe we are both on the same page about the reasons we (India) are in this situation. But I am feeling like you’re a bit too attached and sensitive with where you were born, and hence in a little bit of a denial about the situation (outcome) itself.
Social unrest to perform crimes? Maybe true. Social unrest to evolve for the better? Definitely not.
Agree
सारे criminals चौड़े हो रखे है with their भाई as PM and HM. Translation: All the criminals are encouraged with their brothers being PM and HM.
Society is collapsing... just insane. I read a paper stating that India opened over 35k official rape cases last year (that’s over 95 a day) with the real number being probably double if not triple. Man... what a society... 🤢🤮
OP, I am currently in India and business is as usual...the only place where I see nominal unrest is few whatsapp groups (like always)....With MNCs and corporates, the middle class folks are busy managing their lives...Politicians are playing with our tax money (I understand less than 5% of population pay tax) as usual....I don't know what rural people are doing....the business class is trying to play safe in current government to avoid raids and all....young kids are trying to make money off youtube, tiktok, netflix sitcoms, jobs at MNCs etc.....so in short there is no unity to cause a massive social unrest that you are thinking....everyone seems to be saving their own asses vs. going out and creating more scene...it's like gun shootings in US...thoughts & prayers and then business as usual...I guess this is what we as a society globally have come to....In my observation with proliferation of so many social media apps, attention span has shrunk significantly...I will switch from blind to watch funny videos on tiktok or browse through facebook and other apps...my mind will instantly be diverted...for social unrest, all the media will have to play the same story....but currently this doesn't seem to be happening...my $0.02 🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing an alternative perspective. This is helpful to know.
Is this just another “I am a NRI and after I moved the country has gone to dogs post” - ok. If you so pained, you know can always get a ticket home and help out.
No. I took a sigh of relief after I could get out of the shithole and lead a better life here in a developed country.
Pwc I am so happy for you. You might get shot at while ordering a hamburger, or your kids could get murdered just for being in school the wrong day, but you escaped the shithole!
I felt almost the same. With increasing number of such incidents and the precedent that police has set in this specific case, next time such a case occurs, so much pressure on police then to go the extra judicial way. All of this are signs of moving towards an uncivilized region
