And then position myself according to that in salary negotiation?
Sure. You can ask. ...however, it's a stupid question to ask, because all it will accomplish is showing your manager that you don't understand employment or privacy laws. They can't disclose other people's salaries to you even if they wanted to (and they don't).
Not sure if OP meant something else. Obviously you cannot ask salaries of others in the team. I have a related question. Can I ask for my level what is the salary range? Maybe OP meant this.
It's not a fair nor right question to ask for common sense reasons.
No because if the best person is 10x better he also deserves 10x more. So it’s not about being “fair”
Focus on your self-worth, the proper pay is how happy you get paid for the work you are doing.
You should ask your co workers how much they are paid. The only reason people are private about it is because managers don't want you to know how much everyone else is getting paid, to put you in this exact position where you don't know how to properly negotiate
Stupid question and won’t get a response
Know what you are worth. Ask for it. Get the money up front because raises come slow.
Certainly fair, but foolish because they'll never tell you.
The whole premise of "positioning yourself"is wrong. Don't give a number. They have to give a number first, then you simply bump it up during negotiations to make you sign asap.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Ask all you want. Shows you can ask irrelevant questions.
