Google CFO confirms 'large-scale' layoffs (Apr 17)
I had an on-site with a startup for a Lead Data Scientist position, which initially comprised of 5 interviews. But, I ended up having seven rounds. 1. Presentation of your best data science project (30 min) 2. Machine/Deep Learning round (1hr) 3. Coding - (1hr) 4. Lunch with some behavioral questions - (1hr) 5. Coding and system design - (1hr) 6. Exit interview with CTO - (30 min) 7. Another exit interview with the head of data science - (45 min) I was dead by the end of the day — 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Is it usual to have so many interviews? Is it because it's a startup?
Sound like a small company where 1 bad hire could cause them significant problems. They are just being thorough.
Ahh makes sense. 🤔
I think the latter two might have happened because you did well
I guess, the interviews in the Data Science domain are so varied that you don't know what to expect sometimes.
The normal interview loop for a SWE at Square includes six interviews plus lunch and nine people, though you really shouldn't be getting evaluated at lunch.
Daamnn. That's next level grilling.
It's pretty similar to your loop really. Three coding, lunch in the middle, one past experience, one architecture and system design, and an exit interview with the hiring manager. The non-coding interviews are with two people each. It's definitely a full day.
Actually, your lineup is a little lighter than many of mine.
What roles did you interview for? I can't imagine how people get through these. It's a lot of stress
Sounds like a great place to work. Now that you spent a whole work day with them, do you see yourself repeating it for 300+ days?
It's better than slacking and blinding at work. Which is my current scenario
You need a side hustle
Interview with CTO and head of data science are the “veto if serial killer” interviews. Startups tend to want a cohesive culture, so they just want more signals
Yep the questions were asked in the same manner for cultural fit
You’re good if you knew how cultural interview works. Sleep easy!
Definitely do it. If not the job, you'll get some experience from it. My motto is to never reject any interview opportunity
Congrats! My interview with Qualcomm about 5 years back was with 11 people. I was drained and just done by the end of it. The slap in the face was the offer which was not much more than what I was making then. I was pissed off. But, it happens I guess, based on the many responses here.
Wow 11 people must be really hard
Yeah.. They flew me out, and it was just the whole damn day.. I hope the offer you got was worth your time and is in ballpark you were expecting
It's normal for some companies. I had 12 onsite interviews at my current company. 8:30am-5:30pm non-stop. Had plans to look around the city in the evening, but went to the hotel and slept coz I was out of energy.
I can completely relate to this
They just want you to solve a problem of theirs without paying you, then reject
I got the job tho
The long con. They’ll keep having you solve their problems until you don’t want to anymore. So devious
