Is it true that if Microsoft (India) employee accepts offer from Google, he is escorted out the same day?

What about notice period of 45 days? Also, in case that is true, does insurance coverage also stops the same day?

Yes in the case of my colleague actually the manager and managers of sister teams actually manhandled the guy and literally threw him out of the campus.

It happened to a friend of mine who left for Amazon. This was in Redmond, a few years ago.

I was just kidding guys. Yes they are asked to leave the same day but the manhandling part was clearly a troll.

Wow I didn’t know they were so vengeful ....

They aren't. They do it to limit leaks and last minute stolen documents / code / decisions etc.

      How is that vengeful?

Anyone with half a brain is smart enough to do that stuff before giving notice @dapaps. Their policy doesn’t do much except to appear vengeful.

How is it vengeful? They keep paying you for 2 weeks so it's basically free vacation. Keeping an employee that has no incentive to work hard and let them keep their access to the code base, emails and company resources is not very smart.

They must want to prevent leaks from people without the cognition or foresight to plan ahead.

And no one is going to undertake any meaningful project in 2 weeks. They can be a morale drain for other team members by mentally checking out.

The official policy is you get walked out. However you don’t have to tell anyone where you’re going. Most managers won’t enforce the policy if you tell them and are on good terms. The walk out will definitely get enforced by HR if you or your manager indicate where you’re going after on the exit survey. You will still get two weeks of pay and are still technically employed in terms of stock vesting, health insurance, etc. but you will lose your access. Insurance coverage will stop after that but you are covered by Cobra retroactively for a few months.

Probably some CYA maneuver in case they have to sue later and show they had done their due diligence of not letting you stick around and collect more confidential business information even though they knew you were going to a competitor.

One of the possible reason which I can think of is to avoid the ripple effect.
Suppose if a person gets into Google/Netflix/etc and he stays at MS for one or two month, then it will lead to some casual conversation with other co-workers. Topic can be anything related to bad or less exciting work at current place, feeling stagnated due to politics, better TC etc. This can trigger other people (at least temporarily) to think about their current state and result in more attrition. And as more and more people will leave, one or two at a time, the situation will get worse only?

PS: Very few people stay in touch with ex co-workers, even when they had good relationship with them while working together

Nope, we don't walk people out. That's a dick move. We trusted them until the moment they give notice and not one second after? That just sounds silly.

I think he means that if you go to one of those companies, Microsoft wants you to leave immediately.

  • Yes, maybe not always, but I saw it happened. There is no requirement for 45 notice. Insurance stops, but you get cobra.

      Does COBRA apply in India?
      May 5, 2018
    • Microsoft / EngAmI3vil
Probably not. 45 days is a requirement in India, IIRC. Check the “Leaving Microsoft” article on HRWEB, they have an exhaustive table listing every country’s requirements.

True and not just google. There is a list of companies. You get escorted out same day however MS pays for the 45 day notice period. Ain’t that something.
