Is it worth interviewing at Amazon ?

Facebook hi, there
Feb 18 44 Comments

Currently living in Seattle and world like to stay here.

Interviewing with a bunch of companies located here (google, uber, Lyft etc.)

Should I interview with Amazon as well ?

From what I heard:
I. Amazon interview is behavioral heavy these days, which is pretty boring, you can’t even use it as a good mock interview
2. Vesting schedule is bad: 5, 15, 40, 40. So you get peanuts if you leave before 3 years
3. Culture and work life balance is not that great

PS: no offense Amazon folks, those are the things I heard and I am looking for your suggestions

Level at FB: E5
TC: 340k

Given that you are coming from FB, AMZN is one (amongst other bets) to negotiate a high TC. I would suggest interviewing.

Also WTF is wrong with people on Blind these days? How come nobody told OP to TC or GTFO? Kids these days, spoiling Blind for us old timers.

    Obligatory TC or GTFO OP.

The vesting schedule is not an issue. Amazon gives you a total comp figure. They give cash bonus for year 1 and 2 to hit/exceed this total comp. Then year 3 and 4 are stock based and it continues this way till you leave.

Culture depends on team. Theres many good ones.

I say fuck it why not. Maybe try for principal/sde3. The PE role makes you the lead for a ~100 engineer organization.

SDE3 can match/beat FB E5 comp. PE will be hard from FB E5, very different rolea, but no need for it to beat that comp.

Stay away unless the role @ Amazon is aligning with your career progression or is giving a significant number too hard to refuse.

WLB and politics in some teams is not worth the move. Again it is in some teams

Colleagues work on most weekends and holidays as well.
Fortunately, I only work on some of the weekends.

Yes, I initially felt a little burnt out, but now I am used to it. Even after 15 hours of work, I still get just enough time to have a 7 hour long sleep. So it’s not that bad for me.

I feel lucky to be in my current team, my sibling teams are worse (16+ per day, 6.5 days a week).

      > “that’s crazy “

Son, you don’t know what crazy wlb means here. Imagine if my wlb is “decent “ according to fb’s standard, what crazy would be.

I get enough time to sleep and not under constant stress of getting fired, unlike my peers in close by teams. Lucky enough.

try switching teams internally at FB. WLB isn't tied to company, it's tied to who your team/org/manager is. you might have a higher chance of having a shit WLB at Amazon. Amazon doesn't even pretend it cares for it's employees. worst case scenario at Amazon is that you'll have both shit WLB and worse benefits than at FB.

imagine having a shit WLB and you have to take time out of your busy schedule to walk to a convenience store to buy batteries for your wireless keyboard/mouse because your Amazon office/building won't stock them. that's the kind of dumb shit you have to deal with at Amazon. I got sick of jumping through a million hoops to get basic shit done while I was working a large amount of hours.

not every team at Amazon has shit WLB. but you will enjoy a FB team with an equivalent amount of WLB more than an Amazon one.

Thanks, that’s why I feel lucky at FB even with not so great work life balance

Any idea which companies in Seattle have good wlb ?

Some of my friends at Oracle do a strictly 15-20 hours per week. Yes, they don't make 300k but are making more per hour worked.

Downsides you listed are all true, but let me list some upside for aws:

From all the people I have talked to, from other companies these are things I think you can only get at AWS:

    1. Great talent in some deep technical areas (database, Ec2, storage)
2 You will see first time what customer obsession means and how that plays out in decision making at higher levels in Amazon. It’s unlike anything u will see at other places
    3. Be part of some PR/faq process and u will be delighted and how company prioritizes what to work on
    4. The rate and ease with which AWS can just spin up a new service and new region is amazing ... it’s reached a state where very difficult to achieve things at scale are just easy.
    5. Finally, you will see why there is tech debt and why it’s not all bad.

Good Work life balance is my priority. That’s one of the main reasons why I plan to leave FB.

Some of the things you posted, I have already experienced at FB, guess time for a change 😀

I want an easy life for next 2 years at least, I am tired of the stress at FB

”things I think you can only get at AWS” - FB infra can setup their own cloud rivaling AWS. I am kicking myself for taking OCI😐

If you want a great competing offer, get Snap. Don’t waste time with Amazon unless there is some chance of joining them.

That’s why I am already interviewing with so many other companies.

What benefit would I get from interviewing at snap? They offer high TC ?

Yes. If you get L5, TC could be upwards 450k.

I wouldn't work for a company under that much monetization pressure that would probably have to fire me in 6-12 months, but the offer would at least be solid to bounce off of another company

At my company engineers get Amazon recruitment emails several times a month. Every engineer who has worked there previously warns us to stay away. I know everyone's experience is different, but I've never heard anything positive from the engineers I've spoken to

I like Amazon a lot. More than Google (I worked there for 18 mos). Interview at Amazon is technical AND behavioral. But behavioral is just finding anecdotes from your career that showcase the leadership principles, and if you're a E5, you'd have plenty of those.

I like Amazon culture, and never had issues with WLB.

OP, you can get good WLB, if that means work hard then go home, except once every two months when you're oncall, and during Black Friday / Cyber Monday / Prime Day (these days I usually start working at 4AM) if you come to retail. We're hiring!
