Who should be responsible for an individual’s choice? https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=a2b9f2e7-1926-45bd-970e-528394449221
Women breast feed, men don’t. If there is no mother around for whatever reason, I could see an exception being made to give men the leave, but otherwise human biology makes it clear a woman should get more leave.
Erm... men are more than welcome to a longer parental leave as soon as they start birthing babies!!!
Equal parental leave makes sense. Under CA law, Women who've given birth (but not adoptive moms) are also entitled to disability leave because of the birth, and I have no problem with either (A) counting that separately, or (B) counting it as part of a larger total that dads get too. Having worked at one company where I just got my CFLA leave when my daughter was born, and then at FB where I got more leave and at full pay when my son was born, obviously was nicer to have more time off with him.
I think it should be called tax payer creation leave, and they are creating the workers that will pay your social security, Medicare, roads and police once you retire and become a non contributing member of the society
What social security?
One advantage of men and women getting same 4+ month (or almost same) parental leave is the decrease in gap of men vs women career. Irrespective of what companies say, if a man takes only 1 month off for new born vs woman taking 4 months off then there is a forced career gap between man vs woman, more so when you look at couple having 2-3 kids within 5 years span. This is in addition to all the goodness that comes after getting longer parental leave for bonding with new born. Mom does lot more and deserves lot more. 100% agreed. If Mom gets 5 months off and Dad gets 4 months off is better in reducing career growth gap than Mom gets 5 months and Dad gets 1 month.
Should single people be required to work more hours to cover for someone else’s baby?
The company should accommodate people with babies. That may be hiring more people or asking you to do more work. If you do not think that they are paying you appropriately for the amount of work, then you should leave if anyone would pay you more for that work.... Or you can just go to blind to whine and bitch like a man-child
You sound empathetic. Thank you for the support and thoughtful response. I’m sure all employees will be happy to accommodate your life choices.
I'm a father and I can say that the newborn requires the mother more simply because the father's nipples are useless. Women serve our society in more ways than people appreciate. They deserve our support when they are pregnant and nursing.
