Is it harder to get to E6+ or to director levels in NYC due to the smaller size of the office (specifically FB)? Anyone with first hand knowledge?
Certainly harder from an external hire perspective. I was told both at FB and AMZN - they’d have much more options and roles at their HQ compared to NY. Google has complete verticals here and is slightly better.
If you are a new grad, it will be 5-6 years before you get to e6. And director level is e8, so add a few more on top of that (if that ever happens at all, only few get to that level).
Wait, you can expect to hit E6 in 5-6 years?! That’s so fast, most at google never hit 6 ....

For ICs I think it gets harder around E7. Definitely harder for E8+. For manager track, there are a reasonable number of M2 roles and the site is growing. D1+ is harder.
Thanks for the insight! Seems like it’s not an issue for quite some time then joining as a new grad
