Moved to California some month back and all I keep coming across are a bunch of over worked, over stressed, and unhappy people! It seems that couple who are in tech industry or working adults no longer have the time to be happy individuals with thriving marriages, a social life or family. Has this booming industry ruined our generation of being happy individuals with hobbies, social life, personal happy home life, or anything other than what they do for work?? It seems like most people work long hours only to come home to keep working and no time for anything else. It’s no wonder there are so many depressed people in these high tech places committing suicide! Have we lost the capability to live separate lives aside from our work? Is the salary really worth it??
It's hard to disconnect from work.
Yup. It's generally harder to disconnect from work in the software industry. I end up thinking about the problem I am working on and best solutions even while I am driving, at home, etc. On the other hand, I have friends and relatives who work in service sector, bank teller, teacher, etc, where they can cleanly leave work at work. But can't complain. What I lose in work-life balance, I make up in TC :)
^ sad but true
When you prioritize TC over everything else. This is going to happen.
When you have a long commute, high cost of living and low quality of life, you have to justify all of this by prioritizing TC. If you don't, then why live here.
Firstly, holy shit your name is hilarious 😂. Second, I don't think it's obvious that op prioritized paycheck over everything else
no. its just people with hero complexes. living a relaxed life in tech is completely possible. most of my friends work 10-4 hours and take 4-5 weeks pto. it depends on what company and who you hang out with.
Yes. Yes. Yes. I notice this a lot in my tech friends. They talk work outside work, can't hold conversations, don't understand relationships, and their goals in life are limited to buying million $ houses.
it’s always worth it if a lot of people are doing it. Everyone is different.
Lets not blame the industry its individual’s choice. One can be in the industry, give 100% to work, family, friends, hobbies, volunteering and self. Tough but possible.
Grind it out hard for a few years, level up if need be, then move to a LCOL area to raise a family or more seriously pursue other hobbies/goals. Many people follow this pattern. The Bay Area is just a good place to get a financial foundation, after that you can pursue your dreams elsewhere with better WLB and more time for family/friends.
I guess since they move, you don’t see these minds around, only people still in the bubble
I’m so grateful that I have a job with genuine WLB in Toronto. My TC might be small but whatevs

How many hours a week do you work?
Unhappy people are everywhere at work even in banking, restaurants, stores, doctors
Damn. talk about a demographic that would make a killing if someone solved it.
Beer. Cannabis.
