ByteDance is officially fucked
I know this sounds weird. Any suggestion Is appreciated. I got a new job in a new company, the start date is confirmed. Then I went back to my home country. Unexpectedly, right now I really need more time to deal with something and delay my start date. I know someone would suggest honesty but I don’t have an imperative reason and I really don’t want to look like I hate working there before I start working. A good excuse for example: I could have lied that I got h1b visa checked, but I’m a U.S. citizen. My recruiter knows it. My manager doesn’t need to apply h1b or eb1 for me so I guess he knows it (or not?). The difficult part is that I’m totally new. And I don’t want to ruin my first impression with any solvable excuse to postpone my start date. Any good excuse like h1b issue? Really appreciated!
“Family emergency”
I don't see anything weird in your situation. I think it's pretty common, actually. Just explain your new manager the situation, in as much details as he needs to know.
How long? If it’s a week or two, just say you’d like to spend time with family.
Yeah not weird at all, just be honest. If it's only a short time then it doesn't matter. They'll probably want to delay to any of the proceeding orientation dates.
I deferred my start date for my most recent job for over two months so I could collect my annual bonus and some vesting stock. My new employer was very understanding.
Lucky boy
Most managers are okay with you telling them that you need a few more days before you start to decompress from previous opportunity.
Why not just be straight? “I had something com up that I need to deal with. I need another week. Can we postpone my start date by a week?”
Yeah ^^^ works too. But if you just want to avoid the lengthy discussion of why, then you can say decompressing. You don’t want to join a team and be a drag 🙂.
