Is this the culture?

I saw a post on Linkedin from a consulting company in India advertising for a network engineer contract. One part read “No females. Looking for male candidates only.” after after reaching out to some contacts not only was the post pulled but the contract was pulled from the consulting company. Since that has been taken care of I have to ask: Is this the culture in India? On one hand its got no place here in the U.S. On the other I heard someone say “thats just their culture.” True?

Shootings week after week. Is this a culture? From one end I hear people in America are nice and on other hand I continue to see shootings? Who do I believe?

That doesn’t answer my question and in fact puts up another horrible thing in my face to distract from what I can only guess is true. It’s called an Ad hominem. If you’re educated in the least you’ll know what that is.

Maybe they didn't really want to offer the contract to an Indian company and the "no females" was all the justification they needed

In any case that is all the reason required in cases where women are discriminated against.

@webecisco it would be wrong to say that's the culture there. I have worked with many female colleagues there in the past and although I have seen few managers favor a male candidate cause they can be asked to stay back at the office and work extra hours, I don't think that's the norm. So, to answer your ques, a few companies might have a biased culture but not all.

Thank you. I genuinely wanted to know because I could not believe that of a whole people. Many great things about India. Like anywhere else there is bias. So, again thanks for simply answering my question.

Two words: developing country. I came from one and these are the norm. I used to see “looking for a good looking female receptionist” But Enlightenment will take its course, change is happening.

Indians do discriminate against women at work either in glaring ways like you mention or more subtle ways by making assumptions that deny them promotions or opportunities...... sexual harassment is also highly common...it's merely a reflection of society at large...

It depends, I have seen this similar post for network engineers which have a lot of field work needed. Although it is sad but these things happen, definitely not everywhere but at some places. On the other hand it might have not been this blunt or straight forward but can't say I haven't heard similar but more subtler discrimination here.

At least this particular job post is honest upfront which I appreciate. Rather than here in US where they will mention we are an equal opportunity employer but still ask us to disclose gender, nationality, disability, Hispanic/Latino, veteran status and what not. There is absolutely no proof that companies may not be using this data to discriminate when giving out interview calls. I would prefer a company getting honest upfront over brutally discriminated under the covers.

Don’t be a sour looser.

It’s that consulting company and it happens here in the US too. They just filter you out in the LinkedIn stage.
