Now Microsoft growth rate seems to higher than Facebook or Google. If I get 10% to 20% extra in pay and 25% extra RSU than the my unvested MSFT stock, does it worth to move to FB or Google? I'm in level 64 promoted in September 2016. I hope to get 65 at least in 2019. After three years what if MSFT share price is $200 (about 150% up) but Facebook share price stays around $300 (about only 55% up)
Their annual stock refresh is much much higher...definitely move!
it’s always worth to move from MS
This sounds like a simple Excel worksheet. Look at the amount of RSU each is offering (in terms of what will have vested) over whatever time period you like (I do 3 years) and look at what you expect each stock price to be worth at some future time period. That’ll tell you which is the best RSU offer. More importantly, where do you think you’ll be happier working and more productive and have a brighter future? That’s where you’ll make the most over the long run, because it is where you’ll likely be most successful.
fb and google has more smart engineers than msft. so join those companies if u get chance...whether company is doing well or not engineer shouldnt care...in publicly traded companies after all major comp part is stocks so working with smart people is the key thing
I am wondering why it's often assumed that if "company x has more smart engineers" then one should move there.. I am currently interviewing with Google but have been hearing that everybody there is overqualified for their job, there's not many big challenges to solve, and it's hard to get noticed. These don't seem like good things to me.
correct. not all teams in fb or google are good. i am in shit company like cisco but my team is best because of people. i have 250k $ of cisco stocks at grade 10. no one can get that much stock at this grade in cisco. but my company is shit and i will leave.
Depending on your level. If you are 65 or below then move makes more money.
Go get some offers and then you will know. Just don’t tell them your current comp and make sure to get multiple offers so they can’t lowball you. FWIW I left as L63 for the equivalent of MSFT L66-67 comp at another company. MSFT people tend to underestimate how big of a difference it really is. The other thing is that your skills will be more relevant to the rest of the industry if you develop further elsewhere. MSFT is a bubble in terms of tech stack.
