I've been accused of being a workaholic just because I really like my work.

I know a lot of people who like their work and like getting stuff done and being generally productive. On the other hand there are people who think hard workers are suckers, but I generally find those anti-productivity people detrimental to teams in general. Some of them are professional lazy people and make a decent living at it though.

If you are working after hours you are putting peer pressure and ruin my life too. I will make every effort to stop you.

Why do you think they are trying to ruin your wlb? Could it not just be that they are at a point in their lives where they need to have more dedication to work than you? It happens . I put in many hours of nights and weekends when I was a new grad and when I ended my LTR. When life changed, and I had a relationship again, my hours dropped back to normal. Career growers are not linear. Why don't you people just let people do what's right for them? So long as they are just working and not ad-mentioning you in slack messages over the weekend. It's important to note that, it takes time to get a good handle on side projects that you might be interested in. In certain points in life, working within the structured environment of a day job is what one seeks to do.

Nope, don’t really care because our manager will compare our “dedication”.

If you have no life and want to spend it at the office, prepare to face the consequences.

      Consequences from whom?
Every "good" manager I've had helps you pace your career. It's not a competition. It's an individual marathon.

Then don't work there! Amazon and Netflix are meant for sprints, where you want to spend N years boosting career. They are not lifestyle choices.

You are actually cutting ties with your peers working extra hours and will be very harmful to your career in long run because now you are indirectly asking them to work more hours. It does not end well my friend and i can give you tons of my experience. You may have good heart and love your work but your managers may not think that way and expect everyone to work like you. People have family, personal life etc and they don’t want to give their life to a company which can lay you off in heart beat if they don’t need you. If you like your tech so much then do some side project.

I am not trying to get people to like me. That is just foolish -- if they like me, that fine, same if they don't like me. At the same time I don't want to give people a reason to attack me.

Side gigs is something I have been looking into just haven't found ones that I like yet. I know they are out there just haven't found the right in/resource.

Work as hard as you want. When I went through my separation in my LTR, work kept me sane. I overworked. Everyone who got upset with me because they were stressed out about my working harder has no moral grounding there, because I was doing what I need to do and they were doing what they need to do.
Later in life, when I had my parents live with me full time, I worked 35-40 hours a week. It's okay. Do what's right for you!

I do, but I like my setup at work, and there are less distractions in the office. And you have to do stuff separate from your work, at home, to recharge. Nothing wrong with gaming or going out to dinner and other fun stuff.

I used to work or spend time on work related stuff when I was younger and no family. I went to work every weekend. There’s nothing wrong with it if that’s what you enjoy doing. You can consider moving to another company where this is more or less a norm and you can find more people like you. I had buddies who were exactly like me and we also did some fun stuff at work. Well now that I’m older, I have a family and kids I don’t have the time or interest to work like that. However, the early days of work did pay off I guess as great reputation and performance history.

One other thing, don't worry too much about others. Do things for yourself. If you put in 60 hours a week, your boss will start expecting this from you. He'll think he is paying you x amount for 60 hours. Then if you decide you need a break and want to do 40. You will screw your boss over because he planned for you to get 60 hours work done a week. This will put pressure on your boss to put pressure on you. Specially if you got a promotion recently. You will be expected to continue to torture yourself. Or you will be thrown out. Don't get yourself into that cycle lightly. Specially if you plan things like marriage or kids.

Why do you like to work for free? Why not improve your efficiency and get things done in 40 hours?

Wouldn't it be better to diversify and work on different project. I don't see how working extra on the same project keeps you abreast of technology changes.

Well, some people do what you do to get ahead of others. Like getting a promotion. Basically, they work for less pay per hour which makes everyone else look bad/expensive. Not everyone else has free time due to kids etc, so this is not fair. If the company paid you overtime, then I would say work as much as you want. I'm still probably going to get more done per hour of pay. But working for free? Hell no, GTFO.

New/b00: your saying that because you can't work overtime because of family/ kids, a single dude/ dudette who needs to work or wants to work because their life has the need for it or space for it, shouldn't do it? What nonsense.
So because someone isn't super lucky in one part of their life (ie relationship / personal life) they shouldn't put in extra hours and get ahead at work as well?
Sorry, but it doesn't work that way.

You are. Go home. Not something to brag about. And calling people who don’t work weekends and have a life “unproductive” is BS. You can be very productive and have a life. It’s called being efficient with your time.

I’m saying you don’t have to be a workaholic to be productive. The two are not directly proportional. You don’t have to work weekends to be productive. You don’t have to send emails at 11pm at night to be productive. And people who think this is stupid aren’t detrimental to their team.

I'm just talking about myself. I don't try to control what others do. And I certainly won't fault people for not working weekends. I only do it if I want to. I'm not worried about looking bad if I don't work on the weekends. I do have a life, but I find my work enjoyable.

People will get upset if your management keeps bringing up your name as an example of how they should be working.

I start later in the day so it’s not uncommon to see me push PRs at midnight. My manager actually had the audacity to tell others they should be doing what I’m doing. I had to set the record straight because it’s not fair towards everyone else that’s around at 8 am.
