During my time at Amazon, I went to an "All Hands" meeting at Key Arena in Seattle. This was during the 2016 election campaign. During the open mic Q&A, a well articulated gentleman asked Jeff Bezos what would be the consequences for Amazon if Trump got elected. This man was worried. Jeff Bezos just said something along the lines that Amazon should always be ready to handle more scrutiny. I don't think Jeff ever thought things would get to this point. https://www.google.com/amp/s/arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/12/amazon-sues-dod-claims-trumps-improper-pressure-blocked-cloud-contract-win/%3famp=1 What's your prediction?
Everyone knows AWS is the clear leader in cloud. In fact, combine azure, Google and IBM and still won't beat AWS. Only reason why Microsoft won the contract is because they support a better hybrid cloud compared to AWS. But thinking long term, especially when we're in a race with China whose outpacing US on machine learning and artificial intelligence, why hybrid cloud? Why limit yourself with on premise hardware? This clearly is a political decision, because if it was logical, we all know AWS is the clear leader in cloud
On prem hardware is still important when security can't be compromised. Saying that cyber security isn't reliable is a massive understatement when it comes to government actors. That's why long term hybrid.
I'm not saying cyber security isn't reliable. But AWS got the clearances to support security even before Microsoft bid on the project. The only advantage with on premise is that you're in charge of the infrastructure and security. That can also be really bad, as you're limited to the resources you have. Also what makes you think cloud providers don't go through the extensive security process? If you want the best, you go with the best. Government loves bureaucracy
Azure is goat 🐐 rodeo . No top security clearances yet and can barely keep the lights on.... shit will hit the fan soon.
i have a clearance and got auto reject from msft. maybe it was for the better

TL;DR Microsoft fairly and squarely beat Amazon in $10 billion Pentagon cloud contract. Microsoft designed Azure Stack to meet hybrid cloud computing needs (on-premise servers). Microsoft has a bigger global footprint than Amazon, which is an advantage for military purposes. Azure is present in 54 regions globally, compared with AWS’s 25 and Google Cloud Platform’s 21.Microsoft in 2018 won a contract to supply HoloLens augmented-reality headsets to the military. It snagged the $7.6 billion Defense Enterprise Office Solution contract from the department earlier this year to provide productivity tools. In 2018, Microsoft won an extension for the United States Intelligence Community to continue using its products, such as Office 365 for US Government, Windows 10 and Azure Government. The company has continued to accumulate top clearance certificates from the DoD. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/microsoft-fairly-and-squarely-beat-amazon-in-10-billion-pentagon-cloud-contract-2019-12-03
Thanks for the detailed info!
Oh BURN! I hope Azure offers Ointment As A Service so AWS can buy some!
