Avoid being a SWE at a bank if you are looking for a great culture. The vultures on the top floors (the higher ups) mostly see you as an expense and a means to an end. The celebrated employees are the investment bankers, wealth managers, the MDs, and you engineers have your own floors that the top management doesn't care about untill you have a massive outage or the servers go down. Countless times I have heard top management at banks refer to SWEs as IT because they simply don't know the difference and can't value the work.
Agree. Tech is a cost center. Maybe tech people working on trading floor have it different
Tech people working on the trading floor systems would prefer working at HFT firms, Jane Street, Renaissance, or other companies that build the trading systems. I agree however that trading floor people may have higher pay.
Although I agree to the above , technology is considered as 2nd class in financial companies even though some financial firms call themselves as tech companies. its definitely not a laid back environment especially if you are working closer to business. Few back office teams or CCB (consumer banking tech) use latest open source and cloud technology and also they are into ML and big data.
One advice. Don't move from Capital One to JPMC.
Why not? An external move would realign my salary.. im thinking $115-120k. Are you mainly talking about the culture?
Yes
Their work places suck big time.
